Does anyone still play?

I'm playing Baldur's Gate Shadows of Amn 4 disc set. I'm on a windows 8 laptop ( i used to play on windows xp and 7) and its asking for disc 6 but my game only has 4 discs any idea what disc i should put in to play the game?
Does anyone even play these games anymore?

The disc version has a problem with 64 bit operating systems, and I know of no work-around (unless you run dual O/S, but that is beyond me). Strongly recommend picking up the EE versions, as they are compatible with new systems. I know it's a small chunk of change, but I get so many hours of enjoyment out of it, that it's no biggie for me.

You have to install it some place else than the (86) programs folder )or what's it's called). I made a new folder on my c: and called it soa tob original (so I can find it). Then install the correct fixpack. They are easy to find on google. And voila vanilla BG ready to play.

And then modding after the fixpack if you're into that. They are all available online as well.

I think gibberling3 and /or sorceresnet have everything needed.

For some reason it will not work properly in the windows program folders. I'm currently in tob and it works almost without problems. Should you have troubles in the game (mine sometimes makes strange mousesurges) your powerword is reboot PC.

You can install the whole game to your hard drive so that you no longer have to swap discs, you'll only need the first one. IIRC you need to select the custom install option. It's been awhile though so I don't quite remember the procedure. I'd recommend that you just buy the EE version however, it's much better than playing the original game and has been optimized for today's operating systems. It's not really all that expensive either.

But this way you can have both vanilla and EE. What's not to like? There is just something about the memories that makes me play the original version from time to time even though the loading takes forever and I am told to remember to eat or change tactics whenever going to another area.

I am wondering if your system might be asking for the tob expansion cd? I only ever owned it as a DVD thus making it my disc #5.

I'm still playing vanilla BG and have no problems whatsoever on Windows 7, 64 bit. I played EE out of curiosity, but prefer the original.

I don't think I'll ever go back myself. The disk flipping would drive me crazy now for BG1. I don't have much time anymore for modding and that'd be the only reason to use vanilla BG2. I really enjoyed BGT before getting married and having a child but alas those days are gone.

The original engine of BG1 is more hardcore and in some ways I prefer it to BG2's. It's too bad BG:EE didn't kept some of the original rules as optional, such as:

    - no pause on inventory means that you must think in advance and prepare quick slots carefully before battles and you can no longer pass items from one character to another in the heat of combat

    - enemies not following you outside their areas means you often have to fight them in cramped spaces without room of maneuver

    - not showing how many charges the wands have means losing some when you don't expect it

And others. Those rules forced the player to prepare better before venturing into the wild.

In case this was not fully resolved yet - what you can do it install the original games. Then look into the installation folder and you'll see there is a folder with the name "Disc 2" or "CD2" (or something similar)
Create similar folders for all other CDs and copy their contents in. (Note - one of the versions has less than 6 CDs and some of the actual cds contain similar folders - just copy them accordingly)

Also, check the file "baldur.ini", at the bottom, there might be a path to the CDs. Just change it to point to your folders where you've copied the game files to.

All you'll ever need is the CD2 to start the game, the game will always find the rest.
