    This app is now obsolete.

    General F.A.Q.

    Remarks - please read!

Before you start to complain, you must acknowledge that due to nature of Baldur’s Gate mods,
community and rules especially about providing working hosting for mods and fixing mod bugs,
Big Word Setup itself is not capable to fix/improve some aspects of automated mod installation.
Despite our best efforts, you will face some minor problems.
It often depends of how many mods you trying to install.
Big World Setup is an overlay for Big World Project which itself is an overlay for mods.
Overlay for overlay for another overlay.

    - BWS cannot fix mod bugs
    - BWS cannot host mods: there will be always a mod which will fail to download and extract properly

Q: Does this tool works for Mac OS X / Android / Linux?
A: No. It was created long time in the ago via AutoIt/Au3 scripting language which is only for Windows platform.

Q: What kind of mod/components conflicts BWS can handle?
A: A simple: mod A require mod B, component 2 of mod A cannot be installed together with component 4 of mod B, to complex group dependence with multiple mods/component group combinations.

Q: I want to install as many mods as possible, all of them! Does BWS can do it?
A: BWS is just a tool and do not prevent people from doing crazy things. There is almost 100% chance that such installation will have quest-related bugs, crash to desktop etc.

Q: So how many mods can I install?
A: The key is to persist moderation. Stick to the mods that you really want to try (you can't have 20 NPC inside you party) and don't add more than 2 Big mods, 5 Quest mods, 10 NPC, 3 Tweak Mods, 1 AI etc

Q: What about additional quest/XP and Items?
A: Many mods adds many quests with huge amount of XP. Use EET_Tweaks to reduce it because game won't be balanced. As for the items: many mods adds many overpowered items which are very often better than best ToB artifacts.

Q: I want harder enemies/epic and thought fights!
A: You can add 'orange' components, but beware: you will encounter fights which you cannot win!

Q: How long installation will take?
A: It depends on how many mods you will install but if this is the first time you use BWS, reserve minimum 2 free days for several attempts

Q: How much free disk space is needed?
A: It depends how many mods you want to install:
For small installation with few mods = ~5 GB
For medium installation with many mods = ~15 GB
    For large Mega-Installation = ~35 GB+

Q: Can I add/install mods later after installation was finished?
A: No, because it will destroy proper install order. Small and non-industriale mods are allowed.

Q: Can I re-install mods and change one or two options?
A: Theoretically yes but practically there is a huge chance that reverting process will fail. It's the nature of the game engine, mods and how they are coded. Also, you saved games will be incompatible. You should read excellent explanation by agb1: Post 1 Post 2

If this happening be sure to write/create specific points for Siege of Dragonspear coming up since the old way would probably not be needed anymore at the end of BG1.

@Jalily Guide is completed. Could you be so kind and add 'Announcement' flag for this topic?

I cannot give this amazing tool enough praise. I've followed and used it for years. Every windows user should check it out. Especially people like me who need their hand held, and for everything to be laid out in front of them in a clear and easy to understand manner, lol.

I posted this on another thread and thought it might be useful to include in the FAQ here:

BiG World Setup (BWS) is an automated mod installer; you can pick any mods and components you want, and it will advise you about known problems, conflicts and dependencies, apply the latest community patches, download the mods you chose (if you don't already have them) and then extract them to your game folder and install them for you in the community-recommended installation order. (You can change the installation order, but this is usually not advisable.)

BWS uses portions of the BiG World Project (BWP) -- bug fixes, language packs (translations and typo fixes) and install streamlining (e.g., some mods do "biffing" - compression - at the end of their installation, and the BWP removes these "biffing" actions from the individual mods and instead does "generalized biffing" at the end of the entire installation). BWS does not use BWP's install script for EE games.

The core goal of BWP is to maximize compatibility between whatever mods a player wants -- whether it be 3 or 300. It does this by recommending an installation order and by providing patches (via the BiG World Fixpack - https://github.com/BiGWorldProject/BiG-World-Fixpack) that can be applied to mods to solve compatibility issues (in addition to bug fixes) discovered through expert analysis and reported by users.

tl;dr - BWS is a Windows tool that assists with mod selection and installation; BWP is an installation guide (PDF) plus a collection of patches and scripts (including an install script that BWS does not use for EE games) that improve game stability for whatever mods you use. BWS uses some aspects of BWP but allows for more customization.

What is this EET you speak of?

EET Overview and forum can be found here: http://gibberlings3.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=27752

Because this tool is implemented in au3, a Windows scripting language, it cannot be used on other platforms (Linux, OS X, etc.). If any programmers have time and interest in building a new cross-platform tool similar to this one, please PM me!

I saw in a post that it's possible to replace the GUI without EET compatibility with one which has it ( replacing "10-Misc GUI.au3" by an updated file. I haven't found the updated file and haven't found either where to download it, any hint on how to give a look at EET through BWS before the release?

everytime i download and install the mods in i keep getting a message saying please start game, choose language you like, and create a save. i have done done this for both games. i have looked for a readme but am unable to find one. i have both games on steam. do i need to merge both games into the same folder? or is it because im trying to run the trilogy and its not released yet?

you need to make a baldur.ini file in my documents/baldur's gate enhanced edition folder

    longer version)
Since patch 2.0 game no longer automatically makes baldur.ini file which is required for BWS to detect the game. So you need to manually create baldur.ini file by right click -> make new -> text file and rename that file to baldur.ini, until BWS is updated.

@DmxDex Fixed, can you re-download and test?
  • argent77argent77 Member Posts: 3,494
@ALIEN For a more flexible solution you could read the value of "engine_name" from the engine.lua to determine the name of the home folder name of the game.

so i tried to install BW with the recommended settings....but so many mods could not be found and had to be inserted into the BW download folder manually and even then i couldn't manage to install most of them with some error messages...is it possible that it doesnt work anymore with 2.0?

@argent77 Will see what I can do.

@Aris4life Please post "BiG World Debug.txt/7z" and weidu.log form you game directory. User spoilers or/and pastebin.com. I've installed "recommended" compilation on:
BG1:EE 2.0 - no problems, except skipped Tweaks Anthology components which are not supported on BG1:EE, fixed
SoD 2.0 - added support for SoD, no problems

I am not able to use the program. It keeps saying I need to start the game, choose language and make a save, all which I have done. I'm trying to use it for BG 2 EE.
  • ALIENALIEN Member Posts: 1,271
    @Kantu Did you update BG2EE to 2.0?

@DmxDex Please read and follow this guide again, then post "BiG World Debug.7z" and weidu.log form you game directory. User spoilers or/and pastebin.com.

Trilogy is not yet enabled as it is written in the guide, waiting for EET premiere.
