New adventure : Play BG as Elminster.
    Features:
    - Wander up to random people and tell them to go exactly where they were going anyway.
    - Piss off when shit starts to hit the fan.

Not to mention; try and get into every woman's pants, depite being a gray, hairy, somewhat senile old man.

    ...

Oh man, this game sounds more and more like real life...

Isn't the 'raison d'etre' of RPGs that you don't know what's coming next? The player will already know that Gorion will not hand over his ward, that the Nashkel Mine will be cleared, that the Bandits Camp will be obliterated etc. up to meeting CHARNAME in hell in ToB! I think only a hand full of BG-saga fanatics will actually play this game.

If they do make a spin-off, I'm saving this quote to make a meme out of you.

But seriously... knowing already the outcome of a particular story has never stopped prequels and interquels from existing in the history of ANY FICTION MEDIA EVER.

Also playing a prequel such as playing as Sarevok or Irenicus would drastically limit the main point of BG - which is the ability to roll up any type of character that you like (with relation to class, stats, alignment and race). How could you possibly play as Sarevok if you want to play as a Gnome Illusionist?

Or BG3 can be a console action X360 game with a bartender with bulging... tracts of land. And an elf in a thong. Right? Right? Oh, that would be BG-DA:3. Sorry.

@decado: As a full-fledged game, that wouldn't work. But as a standalone DLC adventure? I could definitely see myself playing Sarevok in a dark reflection of BG1's plot (ie: gather party members, roam the land, kill bosses, etc.) Not sure it would work the same with Irenicus because his storyline is so different, but Sarevok's story would at least make for an entertaining playthrough.

Fair point and I agree with you, that would be fun as a standalone DLC. I think I was probably responding to someone who mentioned this would be a good idea for BG3.

I wouldn't mind a Sarevok spin-off, but I'm more interested in the time post ToB. I've always been interested in one since reading his epilogue which states he goes off and has his own adventures. Though I expect any spin-off, even if it wasn't a prequel, would probably have to cover his backstory as well to help establish his character and motivation.

Though my idea for a spin-off wouldn't be the top down party based rpg. I'd still have the rpg elements, travelling to different places, interacting with npc's, getting quests etc, but I wouldn't mind it playing like a 3D action adventure game. I think this would suit a game where you control Sarevok alone.

It doesn't have to have the same ending as the original story. They can make it so that the final outcome is different (you end up defeating the original CHARNAME). And there are a lot of things Sarevok did that CHARNAME didn't know about and wasn't exposed to. Sure Nashkel Mine and the Bandit Camp will be lost, but Sarevok wasn't even there in those encounters, it could just be something that happens in the background while he takes up other endeavors that help strengthen his grip on the Sword Coast.

@LordsDarkKnight185 I got to play it back in the 80's on an actual Laser Disc machine in an arcade near me. There are many, many ways to die in that game. I know. :P

The more I think about a Sarevok DLC, the more this comes to mind. :)
