In issue 3 of Dragon+, there's an interview with R.A. Salvatore. This quote gave me a chuckle given all the talk around here about killing a certain dark elf.

D+: And Drizzt now features when the Forgotten Realms appears in other formats...

RAS: I remember I was playing Baldur's Gate and I saw Drizzt and I was surprised as anyone. So of course, I tried to kill him and take his stuff and he wiped out my party.

I would imagine he doesnt 'own' Drizzt, who knows what happened in that time period, but we know they didnt consult with people one would think they would when they unleashed 4th Edition.

Some authors transitioned extremely well to 4th Edition D&D with the Spellplague (Richard Lee Byers did with "The Haunted Lands" series). Others however, completely flopped with a jarring transition (R.A. Salvatore for example).

That there even needed to be that quick transition is all I am mentioning. It wasnt something that as a united team was planned and discussed from what I have seen in interviews. :]
