BG:EE can't load old save files...

Hello! I am having an issue trying to load my old save files in BG1:EE.

The patch downloaded and installed this morning but I'm finding that I am unable to load my previous game saves. The save files appear, I can view and select them, but when I hit the 'Load' button nothing actually happens. Nothing at all. Actually, the music stops, like the audio thinks it's loading in, but nothing else. It just remains on the same screen.

I checked my BG2:EE files and those still load up okay.

Also, I was able to import my save file into Siege of Dragonspear. The files still exist in the correct folder and the game is at least able to read them in that regard.

But regular BG1:EE won't load them.

Edit: Also, I should note that the 'Continue' option is grayed out, even though I do have save files that were saved before my 'Final Save' file (which doesn't load either).

Any ideas? I'd really appreciate some help.

Thanks!

Did you uninstall any mods you may have?
  • kodaColliderkodaCollider Member Posts: 23
I never installed any mods at any point, as far as I am aware.

The save files I'm trying to load are quite old (from 2013 when BG:EE first came out) and I haven't tried to load them recently, but my Black Pit save file from around the same time does load. Just not my mainline game files.

I am also having problem exactly as described - again with no mods installed and none installed when the save files were originally made. I backed up my savegames from when BG:EE first came out and i did a play through on mac. Now this expansion is out i pulled up my old savegames and loaded them up on my new PC but they wont load. I can supply the save game files upon request.

Edit: also if i make a new game then save that game, that file will load totally fine.

Is there something you can suggest to solve this problem?

    @Bento
Good. I am sure that they will investigate. We just have to wait :)

I'm glad that I'm not alone, at least.

Thanks for your help so far, guys.

Just curious... in that ticket, someone posted:

"Work around: Load the game in 1.3 and save it with a new name. The game will then load in the 2.0 engine."

I tried changing my game back to 1.3, but I still can't load the save files. Instead of doing nothing, once I hit the 'Load' button the application just crashes.

Here's the dump file from one such crash, if it helps:

I'm having the same issue - since I upgraded to 2.0, my previous single game saves won't load.
Siege of Dragonspear imports the saves fine, but I get the same refusal to load in BG:EE - whether I load BG:EE direct or run it as a campaign in BG:SoD.

Keen to see the results for kodaCollider...

There is a (or should be a) new 1.3 branch that will show up in steam. This should allow you to load up the 1.3 version, save your save, re-load 2.0 and then load your saved game?

That might not be available to everyone?
  • kodaColliderkodaCollider Member Posts: 23
I have attempted to load my save files via that 1.3 branch, but my BG:EE client crashes when I attempt to do so. I've uploaded my save files (along with the above crash dumps) to the ticket that Cerevant created.

So, currently, I'm not able to load my save files on 1.3 or 2.0.

Right click the game from your Steam library, go to properties, go to the 'betas' tab, and select 1.3 from the dropdown menu.

Thanks. I assume you entered code at some stage to get that option. I do not get any option to change the dropbox to anything other than "NONE - Opt out of all beta programs"

I found a code elsewhere in the forums and im getting the 1.3 patch now - the code i used for anyone else that is interested is: aeK4fiexKuz4voav

Odd, I never had to enter a code, myself. It was just there.

Let us know if it works as far as loading your saves on 1.3. Didn't work for me.

Did not work for me either. I have uploaded the crash log i got from trying to load it on 1.3 to the bug tracker as well as the save file.

I confirmed that I can load the test save file in 1.3 on Steam.

I think the problem is that Steam doesn't always do a good job of cleaning up an old installation when changing an installation. I would recommend uninstalling, then installing the 1.3 branch. Load you games and save them under a different name. After that, you can update to 2.0 and load the games that you saved in 1.3.

We'll have a look and see if it is possible to support the older save game format.

I did try uninstalling and then re-installing, and that didn't do the trick, either... still was not able to load it up on 1.3, though it wouldn't surprise me if Steam was in fact to blame for this as you mentioned.

Did you guys try either of our (Bento or myself) save files in the same fashion?

I don't have the Steam version and I'm having this problem as well.
i also can't load up the regular 'Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition' without it immediately saying that the launcher has stopped working so...
Siege of Dragonspear works fine, but I want to transfer over all of my Imoen's gear so Safana can have it at the start. Can't do that if I can't load the game >_<

I right clicked BG:EE in steam, clicked delete local content, downloaded version 1.3 then tried to load my save game: this did not work

bgeesave.zip (4.7 MB) Delete Koda Collider, 04/01/2016 07:23 PM - i cant get this zip file to open in 7zip for whatever reason

We're seeing some strange things in the PC version of 1.3 on steam. We'll get it looked at on Monday.
