BGEE - Game crashes when I create a new character

ReiRei Member Posts: 66
After the patch, my game always crashes when I create a new character. Always after selecting the gender.

I've tried uninstalling and doing a fresh install (deleting all BG related folders) but it's still the same.

When I load an old game all character portraits look scrambled.

Never installed any mods and I'm using the Beamdog client.

Anyone else? Any fix? Anything?

I am having a similar problem after the 2.0 patch, the game crash after i finish creating a character and press PLAY. I have found out that the problem was the PT-BR language, changing to english solved the problem. But now my game crash everytime i click on the LOAD button. Can't play like this.

Edit: Setting "Baldur.exe" compatibility to windows 98/windows ME seems to have fixed my problem. Must be some problem with windows 10 i guess.

Compatibility mode doesn't seem to work for me. (Using Windows Vista.) Game also crashes whenever I try to load now as well.

Guess I'll be holding off on getting SoD for a while.

What is the model/make of your graphics card? (and more specifically are you using Intel Integrated graphics cards)

I have a same problem after SoD update (from steam). Game crash after selecting gender. Compatibility makes game crash on portrait selecting. Portraits are looking scrambled either in character creation screen or after loading save game. In any case game crash after 5 seconds.
I thing that problem connected with portraits bug.
I use netbook with Intel Atom CPU N450 1,66 GHz (Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150)

Try renaming the "Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition" folder in Documents and allowing the game to create a new one.

    No change.

If you have access to the public beta, does that make any difference.
    Thanks
  • ReiRei Member Posts: 66
I don't, could you point me in the direction of getting access so I can give it a try? I can't see any sign of a beta sign up anywhere...
  • GarmGarm Member Posts: 67
Well, I tried the beta 2.1 and it makes no difference.
  • ReiRei Member Posts: 66
Installed the beta. No change. Same thing happens whether I launch the games (BGEE with SoD or BG2EE) from the Beamdog client, Steam or on Steam after downloading the beta.

Are you able to try the alternate renderer to see if that makes any difference.
Options -> Graphics -> Alternate renderer (presumably it is currently disabled). Once set you need to click Done -> Quit Game -> Quit, then restart the game.

edit, and a couple more thoughts.

When you said "deleting all BG related folders" in your first post, was that for the install (e.g. C:\beamdog\...) and files (e.g. this pc > documents > baldur's gate...)

& does a new game with a pregen such as Abdel work?

This prevents me from starting the game at all. It just immediately crashes until I delete the Baldur's Gate documents folder again.

Correct. Beamdog folder and Documents folder.

No. It won't even let me see the pregenerated character screen. Might be something to do with the portraits since It always seems to crash whenever there would be a portrait on the screen. (E.g. right after choosing gender in character creation.)

A couple more notes: I'm running as administrator, I'm running in 32-bit color mode, I don't have any anti-virus software and I just tried disabling Windows Firewall (no change).

Also, my opening post said I was able to load an old saved game with scrambled portraits. This only happened once. Whenever I try this now, the game crashes just like in the other scenarios. Even after completely uninstalling (and deleting) everything. Very weird, if you ask me...

OK. Could you provide or confirm the below so we can check against other reports to help diagnose.
    • Zip and attach the latest crash dump (should be in documents > infinity engine - enhanced edition > crash for v2.n.
    • From the Windows command line/prompt, run dxdiag and once it finishes choose save all information, and attach the resulting txt file
    • Temporarily disable any antivirus software to see if that makes a difference
    • Advise whether the Beamdog install is to c:\program files\... or somewhere else.
    • Does the documents > baldur's gate - enhanced edition folder have a compatibility icon e.g. as below.
    Thanks

Not running any antivirus software. Even tried disabling Windows Firewall but no change.

C:\Program Files\BeamDog\Games - I've also tried running the games through Steam.

    No.

I should add that the new patch had no effect on the problem.

    Hi @Rei
After launching the game what does the Options -> Graphics screen show for OpenGL version and build.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81508/Graphics-Drivers-for-Mobile-Intel-965-Express-Chipset-Family filtered by Windows Vista 32 bit is indicating the most recent driver would be April 2012 v15.12.4.16, your dxdiag indicates a driver from February 2008 v7.14.10.1437.

If that's correct, could you try updating drivers and reporting back please. It's worth trying both renderers again if you can get updated.
    Thank you

After installing the drivers from your link (even though "Intel Driver Update Utility" can't find any updates) everything works smoothly.

    Thanks for the help!
  • Gate70Gate70 Member, Developer Posts: 3,883
Glad to hear it @Rei - I had similar driver detection issues with an Intel 945 chipset and I'm always a little wary of assuming I've found the correct ones with a manual search.

@Garm @newvillage if you're running Windows are you able to provide a dxdiag.txt file (details on my April 15th post). Might not be the same issue but the more information we have the more likely we are to be able to help.
    Thanks

@Gate70 Apologies for the late reply. I attached my dxdiag.txt file (I had to rename it).

Also now that the options selected in-game are remembered I tried to select Alternate Renderer. With this option I get the error 'Could not compile DirectX shaders'.
  • Gate70Gate70 Member, Developer Posts: 3,883
Thanks @Garm that indicates there are two updates which you may want to try

First off, looks like you may need to install directx 9.0c, which should install alongside directx 11
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/48011/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-3150-Intel-GMA-3150- looks to have a newer driver for Win7-64 from November 2013. Link to that driver is https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19493/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-3150-Driver-for-Windows-7-64-bit?product=48011

@elminster may be able to help further as I believe he has a GMA 3150 chipset available.
    Thanks

I'm not sure how much help I can be but I will do what I can. The issue has at least been internally reported.

I had this problem, was driving me crazy, but managed to find an easy fix. Simply go into the game, open the graphic options and turn on "Alternate Rendering". Then restart the game. Problem solved!

If the game won't run, open your documents folder. Select the game folder and edit baldur.lua file. Revert back from the alternate renderer by changing this value from 1 to 0.
    SetPrivateProfileString('Graphics','Backend','0')

Alternately rename the baldur.lua file and a new one should be created with the default renderer enabled.
