Do You Wish Infravision Mattered More?

HaHaCharadeHaHaCharade Member Posts: 1,644
Ever wish that Infravision mattered more in BG, kind of like it does in Pen and Paper AD&D? Maybe make things really hard to see without it at night? I would say modify THACOs if you don't have it and are attacking at night/in the dark, but that would really handicap humans... It and the spell for it, are just worthless.

The only game were I've seen that Infravision mattered was in the original Diablo, where you could then decide to go in a straight line with packs of demons or look for a more "friendly" way around it... For BG, I think that maybe monsters should be less visible at night, giving a higher importance to Infravision.

It would be apropos to give a symbolic -1 to Thac0 at night to characters without infravision (or, maybe better, a +1 to characters with it).

Wow, that's actually a really good idea! For some reason I always liked infravision, too. And it doesn't seem that drastic of a change, so maybe they could actually change it.

It could also give a slight bonus to detect enemies hiding in shadows.

Always felt like there should be more secret doors to be found in bg1

It sometimes bothered me (but not really all that much) that you wouldn't get to see the detailed swirling colors (from heat signatures) that the drow appreciate so much in their art and architecture.

yeah i have always thought it's nice but it doesn't give the advantage that it should. not that humans should be handicapped too much of course

These are my ideas for infravision:
Characters without infravision would get -1 to THAC0 in dark areas.
Characters WITH infravision would not get any disadvantages in dark areas and get small bonus to spot people hiding in shadows.

Yeah, when Beamdog makes BG3 I would like to see this spell implemented in a way that it matters.

These red people Khalid sees in the dark really gets on my nerves...

I liked it how Spell Revisions ditched the spell Infravision and replaced it with True Sight. Man that was a useful first level spell.

Infravision was given it's dues in NWN, where it helped low level multiplayer parties take full advantage of throwing down a darkness spell and still have their human buddies able to join in the carnage!
In BG, it is a bit of a novelty spell. But it's nice to have it as an option for immersion reasons, even though no one will ever use it.

At night there should be a -1 combat penalty for melee, -2 for ranged, and -25 to detect traps unless you use infravision.

Instead of it, why don't they decrease the line of sight? A blind character can attack or reach stuff that is really close to him.

Agree with the NWN thing; I actually used Blind Fighting as a feat on fighters to counter darkness and the like.

Infra/Ultra vision was a HUGE benefit in original EQ, before they lightened up the game so much you no longer needed a light source.

It's noticeable easier to do the Nashkal mines with group infravision turned on - those damn little kobolds blend into the dark background pretty well. I rather like the impact infravision has on gameplay in BG, even if it doesn't extend to a mechanics level.

I like infravision the way it is. It helps you scan the battlefield in dark areas faster, really convenient but without being overpowered and somehow damage-oriented.
But one or two infravisioners per party is enough to achieve that.

Anyone know wether half-orcs will have it in EE?

Infravision should be a lot more important considering you spend half the game traipsing around mines, dungeons and cellars. It wouldn't make the game that much more difficult to give hefty penalties for people who can't actually see the people they are fighting, after all between the helm, ring, potions and innate infravision by the time you need it everyone should be able to use it.

Apparently not, I think I read one of the developers mention this elsewhere, it's a shame as I'd like Dorn to be my party leader most of the time.

This propably wouldn't be what I would use my Wish spell for, but still I like the idea. Hopefully someone with enough wisdom will make this come through without any unexpected problems (balance-wise?)... genies can be such nitpickers.

It could be a bit more useful. But not so good that everyone just made elves/dwarves.

It would be nice if it was a +1 to thaco and ac in certain areas sort of ability. More of a bonus in the underdark since I imagine compared to a mine in use it would be much darker. Maybe a penalty as well as the case may be.

Ooo and a group infravision druid exclusive spell (level 3 or 4). Ya, ya, ya they don't get the level 1 spell. Just would be nice is all. Maybe I should learn how to mod... I'd have to just disable that "group infravision option and ... *Opens up a copy of computer programming for dummies *

@hahacharade good idea. That would definitely shake things up in the game. Imagine fighting a drow raiding party as night with a bunch of stoneheaded daylighters, mincemeat! I reckon include it, but make it an option you could turn on/off, as it would alter the balance of play in a lot of fights.

I find that a lot of dungeons i go in to are too dark to navigate, especially the Nashkel Mines, i was blind a lot during that. I thought infravision would lighten up the place, but i guess not due to these forums. My monitors brightness setting is maximum and can't find a brightness setting in the game. So just wondering is anyone else having trouble with the dark?
Not just dungeons, during the night there is severely decreased visibility but i'm never actually blind, so night time is fine for me, it's how it should be. Dungeons are a problem though when i try to navigate through them. I don't know whether i'm missing some paths, i just hope that my curser can guide me half the time.
And i've tried dungeons at different times of the day, i have noticed the time of day doesn't affect visibility.
