Companion Starting Level

Apologies if this has been asked before. I couldn't find anything. I decided to do a new BG:EE playthrough before taking on the expansion. Along the way I briefly had Minsc, Dynaheir, and Viconia in my party, just as a fun way to establish them for an eventual BG2 playthrough. So, after playing the initial dungeon in the expansion, I discover that the expansion has remembered that I met these characters and chosen not to level them up to match my PC's level. And they happen to make up the bulk of the available NPCs at this point. So Minsc is level 2, Dynaheir is level 1, and Viconia is around level 4. I haven't left on the main quest yet, but given the level of opposition in the starting dungeon I'm guessing these guys aren't going to cut it. Is there any chance I can move forward with this team? I'm not against dropping down to story mode difficulty, but it doesn't thrill me. Alternatively, any good workarounds/fixes for this issue?
