Can't save

I'm in Chapter 6 of BGII:EE and about to enter Chapter 7, but for some reason I can now no longer save my game - I click save and nothing happens, click it a 2nd time and BG crashes completely. I tried deleting BG and reinstalling via Steam, but still get the same problem, although it will autosave when leaving an area.

Any ideas? Its annoying as I'm using a save I started with BG:EE and continued through BG:SOD to BGII:EE (all Steam versions).
