in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Hi! I'm a veteran of BG, I've finished it countless times with lots of different classes, soloed, legacy of bhaal mode playthrough, etc. I am posting in the BG2 section because that's where the story ends and that's where all the real hard stuff are.

The mods I use are SCS and a few tweak mods for BG1, The Big Picture, Item Upgrades, Rogue Rebalancing for BG2 (can't get SCS working for some reason). I usually play on Insane mode by default just for the challenge, I find the legacy of Bhaal mode to be a bit tedious. There are few tough fights on BG2, I didn't find anything particularly tough on SOD and maybe just 1 fight tough on BG1 (Kahrk maybe? Possibly because I was low level and didn't prebuff hard).

So let's say we play through BG1, SOD and BG2 with 1 single party all the way through, including dual classes - what would be your ideal party if they are all PCs?

Obviously with strong melee, range, and spell casting power interchangeably, what would your ideal party be?

    From a power gaming standpoint my optimal party would have 4 characters. A pure fighter class (eg. paladin/blackguard/ranger/berserker), a fighter/cleric (dual or multi), a gnome illusionist/thief and a conjurer. I find this set up allows me to enjoy the tactical experience you get with a group without diluting experience point distribution too much.
