Trouble with BG2EE Launcher

I am trying to start playing BG2EE again after a year or so. I can't get off the starting line as the game seems stuck on the opening window. It hangs there for a bit before Windows barfs and gives me the error message: "Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Launcher has stopped working."

Anyone else encounter this problem before and can suggest a fix?
