Identifying items

This is embarrassing *blush*

I have Edwin and Branwen, but none of them can identify items, although I even have the identify scrolls.

Can both companions learn that spell?

Branwen is a Cleric. She can't cast Identify (it is a Wizard spell).

Edwin is the only Wizard who can't cast Identify. As a Conjurer every Divination spell (like Identify) is forbidden to him.

Specialists Wizards always lose one school. Enchanters loses Evocation, Illusionists loses Necromancy, Conjurers loses Divination. Transmuters loses Abjuration. The opposite is also true for every example.

The only "specialist" wizard that don't lose any school is the Wild Mage (Neera, for example).

I think one of the carnival shops has a cheap identify, only 70 gp.

You could always snag Garrick. He has decent Lore, thanks to being a bard, and can learn Identify. Of course, you'd have to put up with him being the worse sack of stats to be thrown on a character, but he could always be made into an identification slave. Just park him somewhere, go back when you need to identify, add him in, identify, give him the boot.

Personally, I find using precious spell slots to cast identify a waste. There's a couple other ways to ID items...
With a few levels under their belts bards can identify many basic and +1 magic items. Merchants will identify items for 100 gold a piece. Certain merchants will only identify certain items. Thalantyr will ID *almost* everything.
Edit - Temples will also ID items.

Having played the game too many times I rarely identify items as I know what they do anyway and I like the blue glow.

Honestly paying the 100 gp shouldn't be a huge deal - it may hold you back at first - but eventually you'll have more money than you know what to do with anyways.
