Durlag's Tower Chessboard/Level 4 Question

Going through Durlag's Tower again, and I remember that once the challenges are completed you are taken to a Chessboard.

Can you return to Level 3 from the Chessboard and if not how do you return to the surface after defeating the Demon Knight?

You talk to the ghostly Islanne to bring you back to the surface. She is standing near that last door that Durlag has opened for you after you solved his riddles.
BTW you can even ask her to bring you out without facing the demon but why should you.

And no, you can't go back.

Yes you can go back, if what you mean is travelling back to where you leave, using Islanne. To then fight the Knight.

It's a pain, you have to travel through the whole tower, going down through each level.
Did it last run because needed to get somebody to a temple after that fight and before the Demon Knight.

Yes, of course you can leave the tower altogether via Islanne and return another time - the original question was whether you can go back from the chessboard to the previous level directly and that answer was No. Sorry if my phrasing was misleading. In the earlier levels of the tower you could move back and forth at will and even leave through the front door and re-enter.

Oh yes, sorry. Misread the original question.
