Sniper (do not leave home without one. Squad sight is a must) Support with the 3 med kit option. Hopefully this character can also become a psion. Heavy with 3 alien grenades to take away cover Assault with shotgun/Taser combo to capture Assault with Rifle to cover the Taser's ass when (s)he misses Either a second support with better smoke grenades or a second heavy specializing in mechanized take-downs depending on the mission.
I usually run with a sniper (with squadsight and gunslinger), heavy weapon guy/girl, assault guy/girl (usually armed with a tazer), two medics, and a tank if I have one or support with smoke grenades if I don't.
Later on the game, when I have all the high-tech kit, my sniper gets ghost armour and plasma sniper rifle (with scope obviously); the heavy gets titan armour, carapace, and a grenade; the assault gets the one with the jetpack and the alloy cannon, and either a flashbang or tazer; and my medics get plasma rifles and skeleton suits.
