How Does Helm Crit Protection Work?

I've always just assumed they had to roll a higher roll to crit if you're wearing a helmet, or possibly are unable to crit at all depending on your AC, but I never really knew for certain. I can't find the actual mechanics of it anywhere on Google, so if anyone knows?

The only basic function of a helmet is to disable the doubled damage from a critical (this has nothing to do with AC), though special helmets may offer additional benefits as well.
One last thing, do all the helms provide crit protection, even the ones that don't say it ? Such as the ioun stones and the quest masks like the tribal mask for the quest in BG 1?
- Any item flagged such in the helm slot no longer provides crit protection.
- Any item flagged such in any other slot now does provide crit protection.
It is still an automatic hit, it only prevents the damage from being multiplied.only helmets as an item type offer crit protection and this s always mentioned in the description.
