Personally, I don't care about categorization of spells. All that matters is, "When will this be useful?" If I'm at a point in the game where it occurs to me, "Yeah, now's the time to use Breach/Protection from Magic Weapons/Project Image/my calling card", I'll go ahead and cast it.

Sure, generally this is more a question of optimisation in the context of the thread. Druids are more specialised, and Clerics both benefit and suffer from lacking such a "purity of focus" as it were, but both classes can draw from tools that don't involve being a healbot as the OP wanted to avoid. Hopefully the conversation helped them make their choice either way.
Some dual and multi class suggestions; 2 lvl mage --> cleric. This way, you get a limited kind of access to mage spells... using scrolls! You dont really feel like a mage, because you will think carefully before expending that 1200 gold pieces scroll, using offensive cleric spells as your first choice, Note that scrolls can be used while wearing armor. Thief / Cleric: Same thing, only you need the use any item HLA, so you are kind of a late bloomer. ...or just keeper in the UAI on any cleric...
Mage slayer lvl 9 or 13 --> Druid, specialize in darts. 5 darts of stunning per round with 10% spell failure and +5 dmg is kind of a spell... and then you get all the druid offensive spells as a bonus.
Bounty hunter lvl 15 --> cleric. Traps, especially bounty hunter traps, are kind of like spells, no?
Enchanter 3 --> Cleric is another favorite of mine: you get access to wands, scrolls, and maintain the -2 bonus to saves vs all Enchantment spells, so Hold Person and Greater Command become pretty ridiculous. You can also get easy access to Friends for minimum shop prices.
