Well, I tend to think shipping is the spawn of Satan 90% of the time. All too often the way the pairing is justified starts to chip away at the heart and soul of the actual character ... or you must overlook details of the original character, etc.

    This.

Out of the NPCs in the game that aren't cannon together, I could picture Anomen or Valygar getting together with Nalia, and honestly that's about it.

Keldorn's story already reflects the love of his life (his wife) so I don't see him shacking up with anyone. Minsc is too stupid to have sexual feelings, I think. Jaheira is too strong-willed and matronly for any of the NPCs in BG2. Aerie is also too much of a wallflower for any of the men in BG2. Imoen could actually stand to have a love interest, but it wouldn't be an adventuring type NPC who'd come with you if such a person were to even exist. She strikes me as wanting a normal life to return to.

Considering just about every NPC in both games wants to kill Viconia, I think we're safe to just throw her out.

Kivan has a love interest that was never coded properly into the game.

Coran and Safana, maybe. I guess they are canon to an extent. Safana totally gets Coran killed (unless you intervene).

All the dwarves, gnomes and halflings just don't have a counterpart that also fits their personalities for coupledom. Maybe a reformed Korgan with a slightly more tolerant than usual Mazzy? I dunno.

In the (horrid) novelizations, doesn't Imoen come out as a lesbian? But the books also change a number of things from the game.

I've never really thought much about this, which actually surprises me a little.

As Quartz points out, some of the dialogues between NPCs include flirtations, and in one case an actual relationship develops in BG2.

In Dan Simpson's BG1 walkthrough you can read all the NPCs' lines and get an idea of who is flirting with who.

Doesn't Korgan hit on Mazzy? something about long hard and low to the ground? (axe, apparently)

Ok, I must be the noobiest noob that ever noobed here, but exactly what is meant by the term shipping? Allowing NPCs to have a relationship? or is it more complicated than that with modding and stuff? I have yet to have my first playthrough so I don't know 95% of what happens in BG I'm waiting for BGEE to have my first experience...I must say I am definitely intrigued by this thread...

Shipping is when fans fantasise about possible relationships - sexual or otherwise - between characters. It usually seems to involve quite weird stuff like wanting Penny and Sheldon to get together in the Big Bang Theory, thinking that House and Wilson are gay for each other or considering that Joss Whedon's biggest mistake was not having Giles and Buffy get it on.

Thanks for having "The Talk" with me. All the other kids knew what shipping was and I felt left out. They taunted me and threw stones at me because I didn't know what it meant. I don't know why my mother had never had this talk with me...

So, this doesn't actually happen in game right? Its all roleplay?

Gotta love Big Bang Theory! Funny shit!

Shipping? Why is this called shipping?

I believe it's short for "relationshipping."

Ah, I see! I'd never heard of "shipping" in this context before, I assumed it was some sort of Americanism (I'm a Brit), but sounds like it's more of a fan culture thing

Okay, I have a confession to make. I know a lot of people like shipping romantic or sexual relationships, but I like to ship more like friendships or 'bromances'. I find it much more interesting. Not sure if that still counts as shipping, though.
For example, one of my favorites is Edwin and Alora. I like to think the two of them would make this amusing and unlikely bond of friendship. Never develops into anything more because he comes to see her more like a little sister than anything else, but it's cute, I think.

Alora and Edwin would be an awesome buddycop movie.

I've never "shipped" any of my NPCs. I don't stand for those sort of shenanigans in my party - I don't even stand it with Jaheira and Khalid, the latter of whom meets a very quick end in most of my BG1 playthroughs.

    How I read this:

I've never "shipped" any of my NPCs.

Yeah, that's legit. To each their own.

I don't stand for those sort of shenanigans in my party -

    Oh boy here we go...

I don't even stand it with Jaheira and Khalid, the latter of whom meets a very quick end in most of my BG1 playthroughs.

Yup, sounds like someone is jealous!

You just gave me a good laugh Steve, thanks.

I think the only time I've ever started a romance with my charname was with Aerie and she was such a whiny bitch that I had to shut it down but I think I'll give it another go with one of the new characters in BGEE.

Of course it does. Sometimes you just have to put the internet down and walk away.

I totally ship EDWIN and NEERA.

Usually, I would say that Edwin is mine and mine alone (as many other fangirls say...) but this love/ hate relationship I hope that will evolve throughout BG:EE and BG:EE2 would be soooo awesome.
Let alone the dialouge when you have Edwin in your party while meeting Neera for the first time almost killed me because I had to laugh so much x'D

Neera herself might be a bit to cutsey wootsey for my taste, but since she brings some serious Red Wizards of Thay action in the game, I can forgive her for being so much like Imoen ;)

I started playing P&P D&D after I played BG for the first time and I didn't even know that the Red Wizards were the Nazis of Faerun, since they barely have any serious role in the original games. Which led to an unkucky incident, when I tried to have my Sorceress hook up with a Thayan -.-'

Anyway, Edwin and Neera are prone to hate each other to bits. The opportunity for hilarious banter is just so there! Beamdog, make it happen!

I'm with you. Infact in my party I have all women, my own personal harem.

It's Internet Slang for putting two characters in some kind of love relationship even though they originally are not suppossed to.

    Famous Examples:
Spock and Kirk from Star Treck (probably the oldest shipping)
Harry and Draco from Harry Potter
Frodo and Sam from Lord of the Rings

Mostly it's guy on guy shipping. And mostly it's really scarry.

Don't forget the well known "Cloud and Sephiroth" ship... >.<

As for me, I am going with the love hate Kivan X Viconia relationship.

Rasaad/Cernd. Like watching paint dry. "Oh tell me about Mother Nature Cernd" "Certainly! But I insist you tell me more about the Order of the Sun Soul first!" *romantic smiles*. Ugh. Suppose things could get a bit overly kinky with shapeshifting tossed in...and quivering palm sounds like a *cough* "technique" upon reflection. Oh dear. Thankfully, no-one will ever touch it.
  • ButtercheeseButtercheese Member Posts: 3,766
    @ ForzenCells:
Hah, I didn't even thought of them xD Yes, they would totally fit together. I can also see Anomen and Rasaad in a permanent clinch about ... well anything. Rasaad would totally dominate over him without even noticing or wanting it. Just because Rasaad is such calm and wise person.

    @ IchigoRXC:
    Yeah, true... *shivers*
I personally wouldn't ship Kivan with anybody because I somehow can't make fun of him in any way, due to his very harsh past. Kivan also is sorta asexuel to me. Don't know why.
On the other hand, Viconia is Viconia. She could have pretty much any man she wants. Except for Minsc I suppose. He probably doesn't even know what Sex is -.-
Maybe Viconia and Keldorn would be an amusing couple *chuckles*
