Getting to the Castle Courtyard

Hi!
I did the DMP-square and the River Square (and the whole underground) but when I come back to the camp I get the message that I've run out of time for the Fence quest. So I checked the walkthrough and it seems like you're supposed to be able to go the the courtyard but despite checking multiple saves, I couldn't go there.
Help please! (And I really hope I don't have to replay too much).
