Request: Make it easier to upload custom portraits for new character creation

Hello, I tried going to the Trello board, and was very confused about how to put in a request.

So, I'll try saying something here.

It has always been confusing and difficult for me to learn how to upload any custom portraits to NWN. If Beamdog could do something to make it super easy to do, the way they have with BG:EE, which gives you in-game instructions and automatically formats uploaded portraits for you, that would be awesome.

    {This isn't quite what you want - and I don't mean to detract from your suggestion! - but if you need portrait assistance in the meantime you might find the ~ConvertPortrait command helpful if you don't want to do the formatting/converting yourself. Basically, put your desired jpg - say belgarath.jpg - in your /portraits folder (making one if you don't have one) then load up a game or make a new one and type ConvertPortrait belgarath into the console (open with the ~ key). It'll make all the tgas for you and plop them in the portraits folder for you to select in character creation!

    Still gotta zip up all 5 and give to your friends/server so they can see it, though. And of course, depending on your base image, the resulting resize might look a lot weirder than if you manually cropped, so ones manually formatted tend to look better in-game.}

    Heya! Requests appear on the Input Trello board as a result of the community interest on this forum. So basically you post your requests here and when they get support from other forum users, we add them to the board.

    You can read more about it in https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/67756/welcome-to-the-nwn-ee-trello-board-discussion

    +1 for support on an easy method to do this if one doesnt already exist (without using console commands and such)

    the problem i have with suggestions for custom portraits is that they could runin the atmosphere of the game.

    so ui have a bit of an odd idea for portraits. players can upload and the game can share them amonst other players on the server, and it should somehow be shared into a central database too. then players can vote on them. only the most upvoted portraits get to stay. your portrait can stay for a shortwhile during the upvoting, but if it doesnt meet the minimum after a set period, it will no longer be shown to other players and a default one will be inserted instead.

    I actually see the portraits as a bit of a Magic the Gathering opportunity for artists to come forward to put out their best player portraits. I feel player portraits should be MtG style. Maybe even have a marketplace where players can pay a $1 for a really popular portrait for themselves to use. Like a MtG card.

    @Libertyisback , That's not what this thread is talking about. I'm talking about users uploading their own portraits into their own games like we do with Baldur's Gate. It has nothing to do with more portraits being included with the game.

    It's something that mostly single players care about, I think. I don't know how the persistent world players do portraits - do they all use the default portraits for their characters? But I don't really care about multiplayer, persistent worlds, or servers, as that is something I will never do. I do enjoy being able to put my own portraits into my own game.

    There are mod portrait packs available, and most of the user-created mods on the Vault include their own portraits. It's already possible to upload custom portraits, but it takes a lot of knowledge of the program's file system and folders, how to convert a .bmp or a .jpeg to a .tga file of the right dimensions, and is complicated and difficult for users with only modest computer skills.

    I think it would be a nice feature if it were as easy to upload new portraits to the NWN character creation screen as it is in BG:EE.

    Well said.

    Thats how I'm seeing this as well- For our single player games (I have no idea how pw's do it and I'm sure the server admins have that power) but I like to use my own portraits in games like this for single player without jumping through hoops to do it.
