Just finished my first BG:EE playthrough...

And wow. What a game. Everything was great front to back. I installed the NPC mod and a few "DLC" characters. My final party was
CHARNAME: Cavalier
Minsc
Gavin
Kivan
Alora
Dynaheir

NPC mod allowed me to recruit Alora at Gullykin, Gavin is a nicely balanced Priest of Lathander mod from G3. I romanced Dynaheir and that was enjoyable. Extra content from Dynaheir and Kivan was also engaging and rewarding, had a lot of extra content around him as well, he was always one of my favorite NPCs and he held up across the whole game. I was a little dissapointed with the lack of depth to Alora and Minsc.

Cavalier was fun and did more damage than I thought he would, only having two proficiency points and all that. With no buffs I had like a 5 THACO and -10 AC. I initially chose that class because I'm a tank player and didn't want to go dwarven fighter, and it seems the game was intended for a good protagonist.

I'd like to go through a couple more times before I move on to BG2, so I was hoping for some advice on fun protagonists to use and parties. Currently messing around with a F/M/T, Archer, and Bard on seperate playthroughs. Anything else you guys particularly enjoy or recommend?

    Yay, a new convert.

    Congratulations. :)

Although the game favours "good", it's easy to take an evil party through as long as rep doesn't go above 18, with NPC Project you have the option to use the bards in inns that will drop your rep (like the temples will raise it).
Kind of play it as "clever" evil, you hide behind a mask of respectability.

And evil party members are a lot more fun.
Kivan though is great as you have found out and the extra content for him from NPC Project is really good.

Put some restrictions on yourself next time. For example, here's a few I have been using in my recent playthrough that has made it more fun:

    1. Rest only when at least one is true:
    A. After sun-down.
    B. If fatigued.
    C. If at an inn.
    2. Gaining levels allowed only before resting.
    3. No reloading unless party leader dies.

Oh, and the only way to play is on Hardcore or higher!

My favourite character to use at the moment is a Kensai specialising in daggers so that you can use throwing knives. You can do lots of damage while keeping out of danger.

Check out @Icecreamtub's guide to throwing knives for some other good ideas for knife throwing characters.

I am currently playing 4 BG: EE games. A berserker, an archer, an undead hunter and a thief. My plan is to finish each of those runs so I can import the characters into SOD and then into BG2: EE. I’ve already played BG2 part way before so I already know what enemies I will encounter and certain quests to do with each character. I’ve restarted playing since the big updates have been released.

Fighter/mage/thief is nice because you don't have to worry about party balance when recruiting NPCs. Archer and blade CHARNAMEs are also strong as are ranger/clerics and sorcerers.

Playing a Shaman, and great fun. Main reason: because I can!

I think I'm going to pursue the Archer playthrough.

    Charname: Archer
    Branwen (romance)
    Imoen
    Garrick
    Xan
    Ajantis

The additional character depth from all of them is actually kind of amazing. I was always fascinated by Xan because in my younger days I was adhered to some nihilistic philosophies myself and the extra dialogue is interesting. Imoen really comes into her own, it's a lot of fun. What Branwen lacks in additional dialogue, she more than makes up for in romance dialogue. Garrick is sort of a lovable loser sort and Ajantis really showcases his lawful good alignment even more.
