MC keeps dying to Death Spell

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
It's really annoying, and it's keeping me from exploring parts of the game. Sometimes my MC even gets insta-gibbed by creatures with blue circles. Weirdly, the game goes on as if nothing has happened, except I only have 5 out of 6 party members. There's not even a corpse that I can reanimate - the game pretty much treats it as if my MC is a summoned creature. Death Ward doesn't help either. Does anyone know a fix?

    Can you provide screenshots of what is happening, please.

    I will when I get back from the Underdark. I did find out a temporary fix, though - I used EEKeeper to give me a scroll of Protection from Magic, which keeps my MC safe. Only problem is that it becomes cheesy when the Death Spell casting opponent is hostile - then I'll have PfM during the fight...
