First time playing- solo/duo/trio

So I’m new to BG, never even playing D&D before. However I am pretty well versed in RPGs, and decided to go with a human sourcerer (N-Evil). I quickly got a full party but not a huge fan of carrying around 6 people, would it be a stupid idea to use less people? And if so would I get more XP due to the smaller party?
-any BG advice is welcome as well since I am new.

And is sourcerer a viable option for a solo run (seeing as I’m clearly no BG pro)

It's certainly viable. You will probably need to reload more than you would with a fighter type character, but you can do a lot with a sorcerer just using wands in BGEE, before even considering your own spells.

The game is definitely doable even as a solo sorcerer. But that tends to require a lot of game knowledge if you don't want to die very often, so, if you're new to both BG and D&D, I'd recommend having at least 3 party members if you really can't stand to have a larger party.

Soloing BG1 as a single-classed mage or sorcerer generally boils down to using wands. You might stop by Mike's RPG Center and look up the locations of some early Wands of Monster Summoning and Wands of Fire. Note that you can recharge wands by selling them to a store and buying them back, though this is very expensive. You won't have to rely so heavily on wands to beat the game, though, if you have a larger party.

The 'traditional' D&D party has a core of four; fighter, cleric, mage & thief which will cover all the skillsets needed for successful adventuring. As you are new to the game I would suggest that you have one of each in your party so that you can learn how the different classes function (as well as the rules, indecipherable terminology and questionable logic!).
