Game freezing and locking up

So I've been pretty much stuck in the Prelude after character creation.
I have narrowed down the issue to opening doors. Soon as I open a door it creaks with the sound, opens, and then instantly freezes to the point of closing out the game and restarting. The background sounds still play after game freezes. Any ideas?
