NWN:EE keeps creating new player folders in my documents

Every time I run the game, my preferences are not saved. I've noticed that a new 'Neverwinter Nights' folder is created in my documents each time, appended with a digit (Neverwinter Nights0, Neverwinter Nights1 etc). This has happened since I renamed my digital deluxe folder from 00839 to 00785 as per the instructions in the Beamdog client. I've verified the installation, deleted it, reinstalled the retail copy of the game, all to no avail.

Is there some simple setting that I need to change?
