Google Play - NWN Multiplayer

My wife and I are haviny trouble playing multiplayer on google play. We are playing the game on a galaxy note 8 and a galaxy note 9. When one player starts a server, the other player cannot join the server. We are trying to play the campaigns together. How does it need to be setup so that we can play together on our phones?

The game runs great in single player mode. The stylus that comes with the galaxy note seems to work really well.
