No display on start up - Linux

I got NWN:EE from GOG. I'm trying to run in on Debian 9
It installs fine. I try launching nwmain-linux from command line.
I can hear the intro videos play then the background music but nothing displays.

Some times after clicking or trying to change windows I get a black screen and the NWN mouse cursor and if I click around the bottom of the screen I can hit th exit button to quit the game.

The nwclientError1.txt file is empty (0 bytes)
and nwclientLog1.txt has a few lines that say Error: 40964

Has anyone else run into this issue and found a solution?

I use windows 7 and I have had this happen a few times. If I wait a few minutes I sometimes get the game working and sometimes it doesn't work and crashes. I was using the Beamdog client to launch nwn and that seemed to be the problem. I now launch it directly and I have not had that problem happen again.

This sounds like a potential shader/GPU driver issue. Can you please check if you have all the latest drivers (step 3 here).

Thanks for the suggestions. @Dwayne I tried this, let it sit for 10 minutes with no luck.
A quick update. I did get the game to play in window mode, though it was laggy.
