Unfortunately I think I ran into a somewhat annoying bug. So there is a cut scene where
the thingy appears that disables magic. The description says it will disable all magic in
the area - ok.
I killed the minions but the big guy I can not kill with my current party; I brought him
down to injured. So I chickened out. Unfortunately the magic remains disabled even
independent of the area, so I think this is a bug, because it says that magic is disabled
in the area, not permanently for the whole party. The party slept in different areas but
the magic is still permanently disabled for them, so no more magic for this party. This
kind of means my current run is over or at the least much harder, but the magic system
is quite fun, so this would mean I'd play with less fun.
I reloaded an earlier save and expelled party members such as Aura. I then again
fled from the big thingy; all who were at the big thingy had all magic disabled.
Aura could still cast stuff (when she rejoined afterwards) because she was not in the area
where the big thingy disabled everyone. There may be a few ways to change this bug, if it is
a bug (and I think it is a bug because the description says it disables magic in the area,
even though the functionality appears to instead be tied to all who visit the
area). I guess a simple way is to add a timer, so after e. g. 8 hours rest, all resets
to normal. A possibly more logical and elegant way to resolve this is to simply
do a conditional check - once one is outside the area, magic will be restored.
Not sure what to do right now - I guess I can try to kill the big thingy, but he
hits hard and my party does not, so this seems impossible to win actually.
