I am sure that this game will translate 5E mechanics into a live action real time strategy game. It will not be like PnP, in the sense of trying to mimic thae tabletop experience, to closely stick to it. The translation will be measured in terms of how fun and engaging combat is in real time.

But that is of course the genius of the Infinty engine which was the first CRPG to really deliver a deeply satisfying translation of D&D mechanics to a live action game.

Infinity did it for 2nd Edition AD&D (incorporating some elements of 3E into SoA/ToB). Now Larian just has to do it for 5E.

I trust that they will. They have the capacity to do so, anyway. Success of the game depends on it.

@subtledoctor I'm confused! Because I'm reading in other threads in this subforum that folks are concerned about misses being removed from the to hit roll under the belief that that particular mechanic doesnt translate well to live action gameplay, and that that therefore suggests that Larian will be all too willingi to abandon all sorts of other fundamental elements of D&D.

I mean, I've watched a couple of the videos with the dude from Larian and the guy from WotC (the two front men) and listened to them discuss recreating tthe essence of tabletop play. But I assumed they meant how the story unfolds, with respect to discovery, choices and reactions, and interactions, etc., between players and the DM. For one thing, this to me suggested that the NPCs may at times behave surprisingly. But I did not get the sense at all that they were referring to any sort of recreation of turn based play in a tabletop session!

I think it would be rather strange for WotC to be as involved with the marketing of BG III as they have been without WotC using this game as a great opportunity to make D&D more attractive to video gamers. That will not happen if they try to make it as slow as a tabletop game! And by the same token, I can't imagine that WotC doesn't grasp what made BG/SoA/ToB a great video game!

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but I think the developers understand that the task is to figure out how 5E translates to the same deeply satisfying experience we already have with the Infinity Engine for combat specifically. Of course upgraded to today's graphics capabilities.

I'm still becoming familiar with 5E but it looks pretty good to me thus far. 2nd Edition AD&D is still my favorite, but I think I can get into 5E. And what has happened in the setting 100 years since the Bhaalspawn saga.

I'm more concerned about how well they will write characters and story, honestly! Not that I don't think they will do a good job. But that is where I see this game being most vulnerable to not turning out well.

Missing is the fundamental aspect of D&D combat.

To remove or even tweak a little missing, you need to change the melee combat, the ranged combat, feats, spells that allow SR, spells that allow saves, illusion spells that buff AC, OHK spells like Finger of Death(unfortunately 5e got rid ot it) you can't just make sure that your lv 1 fighter will damage frequently an death knight in plate armor, buffed by transmutation and illusion spells and think that the rest of D&D will not change

And note that Larien criticized resting, spell slots and leveling too.

Sounds like "BG is the best game ever made, but lets make BG into SCL2"

@SorcererV1ct0r Hmm, I'm still getting up to speed, been away from this pastime for a long time. It certainly could be that presssure to make this a popular game with gamers that have no experience with DnD is greater than any desire to keep the faith with what made combat in the BG series so satisfying.

I'm still educating myself on the differences between 2E AD&D and 5E. I was beginning to look into it about 5-6 years ago and then lost the free time for this hobby. Now that I have a bit more time to devote to it, I'm trying to learn what the differences are. How different is a translation of tabletop mechanics to a video game within each edition? That's what I need to get up to speed about. Because it looks like BG III definitely won't be a recreation of 2nd Edition AD&D plus a few elements of 3E as BG2 was. It will update to 5E. So those are the game mechanics we neeed to be looking at I would think. And in that aspect I'm still educating myself. (And remaining hopeful!)

Lemernis, 5e is very easy to grasp. THAC0 and how saves/armor works on BG/IWD is far more harder to understand than anything past 3e. I din't know any D&D rule when i played BG for the first time but learned eventually. And the problem of not following D&D rules is that you will end up with SCL 2.0 or D:OS with BG skin...

Really? Because WotC has licensed a LOT of duds that didn't come close to capturing the quality and critical reception of BG2. N They don't really understand what makes this or that videogame great; they clearly take something of a "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" aproach to licensing videogames.

Well said. See the PS2 games based on Baldur's Gate. And SCL...

Anyway, he don't like spell slots too Baldur’s Gate 3 will shape Dungeons and Dragons’ future story and maybe design

“We’ve gotten some pushback on some game mechanics,” Mearls admits. “You [indicating Vincke] have talked about how spell slots might not be the most intuitive thing. One of the things with Dungeons and Dragons, which I think is very important, is the method by which we do things is not as important for tabletop players as the actual effect on the table.”

Spell slots not the most intuitive thing? Come on, even Dark Souls, an ultra action focused game uses it(at least DkS 1/2 that are the better ones)
