DLTCEP: How does the "stencil bmp" feature in the overlay header work?

In the overlay header of DLTCEP, there‘s this button called „load stencil bitmap“
I could not find any documentation about this feature.
I think the use of a stencil bmp would be an easy way to create overlays with some kind of object mask, but I tried all the different colors and alpha channels and still did not get it up and running.
Is there any experience with this feature? Any help would be appreciated.
