Bug help - Possible NPC Strongholds bug?

Red_RobRed_Rob Member Posts: 6
Hi, I've had a couple of bugs with a modded BG2:EE setup and I was wondering if anyone could offer assistance...

I'm running 'NPC Strongholds' amongst other mods including SCS and I've had a couple of weird occurences. Firstly, I have the quest to find Valygar, but when I go to his cabin and click on him I just get "Valygar has nothing to say to you". I haven't completed the Shadow Temple quest and killed the Shade Lord yet, but I was wondering if there was a variable I could set that would make Valygar talk to me?

Secondly, after seeing the Unseeing Eye prophet in the Temple District the MorningLord priest of Lathander asked me to come speak to him about it. However, when I go into the temple and speak to him he just says the line again, wanders off and then reappears back in the same spot. I'm assuming some variable relating to him having spoken to me outside isn't set correctly, does anyone know what this might be?

Help with either of these would be much appreciated!

    by the sounds of it, valygar's talk file has been corrupted by your mods or changed in a way to not work anymore

    if you want to talk to him so then he just joins your team, luckily you can use the cheat console to make him force join by putting the cursor over him and pressing crtl+q

    for the morninglord priest, sounds kind of like the same issue where his dialogue file is corrupt, my assumption is that he says that line to you the first time you meet him, and then a variable was probably supposed to be set to continue his dialogue, unfortunately i don't have those mods installed so i won't know what variable to set to make his dialogue continue ( if it even does )

    although these are already saved games it might have the corruption saved, but for future play throughs you might want to try and do a clean reinstall of your mods and hopefully that will help make it so you dont get these weird and whacky bugs

    or worse case, you can upload your save and i can try and tinker around with it and see if i can get things in motion despite the fact i dont have the mods, but i still might be able to continue those characters dialogues and then give your save back with the dialogues continued

    Uninstalling NPC Strongholds appears to have fixed the Gaal quest - the Dawnfather gave me the quest correctly once I talked to him with the mod disabled. Looks like there must have been some conflict with another mod I have installed.

    Not been to check on Valygar yet, but hopefully this will be the same result.

    So, another issue has reared it's head.

    Proceeding along the Jaheira Romance, after Jaheira was taken hostage things continued for a short while. I then rested outside and immediately afterwards Jaheira began to walk towards the top left corner of the screen. Whatever order I give her she just turns around and walks into the corner of the screen.

    Checking up it looks like this might be related to a script conflict. According to a guide on the romance this is about the time that Jaheira should leave the party and I should be approached by Meronia saying Jaheira has left. I'm wondering if Jaheira should have left the party but something has forced her to stay, leading to the forced walking bug. I'm not sure what mod conflict would cause this, after uninstalling NPC Strongholds the only mods I can see that might be relevant are 'IEPBANTERS - Extended NPC Interaction and NPC Conflict Revisions', 'CDTweaks - Happy Patch (Party NPCs do not complain about reputation) -> NPCs Can Be Angry About Reputation but Never Leave & Neutral Characters Make Happy Comments at Mid-Range Reputation', or possibly 'CDTweaks - Make party members less likely to die irreversibly'?

    Having done a little BG2 modding years ago I've checked out the save file in EEKeeper and decompiled some .dlg files to see if I can work out what is going on. I can see that Jaheira's LoveTalk variable is set to 17, however upon checking various dlg files including JAHEIRA.dlg, BJAHEIR.dlg, JAHEIRAJ.dlg, JAHEIRAP.dlg, JAERTOF.dlg and others I can't see anywhere this variable would be set to 17, or where the trigger is that requires it.

    Does anyone have any knowledge of the Jaheira romance and can point me in the right direction? Otherwise the only out I can see is to kick Jaheira or kill her permanently...

    whats happening is that jaheira is trying to start a dialogue with meronia, but what could be happening with meronia is that she is in an unavailable spot that jaheira can't reach

    if you can, try and go back a save game and sleep in a VERY open area so meronia or jaheira don't get stuck ( this can even happen in an unmodded game )

    Aha, that would make sense. I rested in the tiny area at the top of Watchers Keep and then immediately travelled to the bottom of the tower on waking. Looks like that must have spawned Meronia somewhere innaccesible.

    Thanks a bunch for clearing that up, I'll try loading a backup save and resting somewhere more open!

    I've the same bug regarding the Unseen Eye quest. The Lathander priest repeats the same lines over and over, leaves and spawns again. I think that my whole temple district might be bugged, however. The first time I entered I needed to explore the area as those outside of Athkatla and Korgan wouldn't talk once entering Pimlico's house. After reloading everything worked normally, so I carried on gaming, but I can't get the Unseen Eye quest working now. Keldorn won't turn up in the sewers either and the Spider's Bane quest from Unfinished business doesn't work either.

    Can anyone help me in giving instructions for EEKeeper or console, how I can try to trigger the two quests? I've really done a hell lot of other stuff since visiting the temple district with Korgan, so I'd like to proceed and not go back to a savegame before that.

    Edit: Btw., I don't have the Multiple Stronghold Mod installed, but rather the NPC Strongholds by Kish. Might be that that mod makes problems aswell.

    I have the same bug in the Temple District: The Priest of Lathander repeats his same lines over and over, leaves the temple and spawns again. The whole Temple District seems to be bugged however, as not only Keldorn doesn't appear in the Sewers, but also those guys from the Spider's Bane quest added via Unfinished Business don't appear. And I haven't met Bodhi either when I first entered the Graveyard, now that I think about it.

    Is it possible to trigger those quests via editing via EEKeeper or some console commands?

    As the forum doesn't let me post my WeiDU log, you may find it here.

    I have NPC strongholds installed as well. I'd recommend the mod on the grounds of the dialog/characterizations being spot on and well written, plus it's fun to watch your companions get their own strongholds and work out the problems according to their personalities (great example is the contrast between Jan getting thief stronghold vs Nalia or Imoen); however occasionally there is some wonkiness with dialog not firing/npc messengers spawning and getting stuck/exhibiting odd behavior (some of this is an inherent problem with the game engine), etc. I make sure to save frequently when I expect stronghold related events to occur or when I swap out party members.

    Google 'bg2 romancing guide' and look for a downloadable doc from sorcerers.net. It'll have detailed breakdown of global and local variables as well as lovetalks in sequence so you can see exactly what's supposed to occur in what order/when and under what circumstances (tremendous spoilers obviously for first timers). Using NI (or Keeper) and this guide you can fix issues with romance dialogs bugging out.

    Really wish bioware had implemented a more elegant method for creatures spawning a distance away from party and then getting stuck out of sight/range for dialog to trigger; this regularly happens at least once or twice per playthrough for me. BD unfortunately didn't see a need to fix this (and in fact the problem seems compounded by the fact creature movement getting stuck is much, much worse in EE than original - wth BD??? :s ), so I try to remember to rest in inns, wide open areas with no buildings/obstructions around, and occasionally dungeons (where dialog NPCs rarely if ever spawn). I've seen problem happen even resting in the Copper Coronet, which has lots of content that messengers can get impeded by.

    I've reloaded an older savegame and revisited the Temple District for the first time. The Spider's Bane quest worked this time, but the Morninglord still won't properly talk to me. Additionally I get the weird bug that I need to explore the District, even though it's a city map.

    Using the Console to spawn the Morninglord again (C:CreateCreature("BHARVAL")) didn't work either. In that case I've just two versions with different hair colours repeating the same lines. Did the Creature code change after patch 2.0? (I got the code from here.)

    Right now I see no other option than a) ignore the quest, cheatcode me the missed items and move on or b) uninstall the NPC strongholds mod and hope that it doesn't mess with my savegame (which it probably will). :(

    Or is there another way c), maybe some trigger help with NI or EEKeeper?

    It sounds like you've got a completely borked install if there's that many issues in the temple district. Looking at your weidu file reinforces my suspicion - that's a lot of NPC mod content, some of which I've never heard of. I don't think the issue is NPC Strongholds.

    it seems that one of your mods is messing up the morning lord dialogue file

    so lets try something;

    by the looks of it, the cleric person talking to you is High Mornmaster Arval?

    if so, we can put in some globals that make it so you have "accepted" his offer to search the unseeing eye;

    C:SetGlobal("BeholderPlot","GLOBAL",1)
    C:SetGlobal("CDWorkingForLathander","GLOBAL",1)
    C:SetGlobal("CDWorkingForLathander","GLOBAL",1)
    C:SetGlobal("NoHelpBeholder","GLOBAL",0)

    now with those 4 cheats punched in, in theory this should make it as if you accepted the offer of Arval, then, you should be able to access the unseeing eye area and if so, do that and finish that area before speaking to Arval again and hopefully everything will continue as normal

    Yeah, I slowly get the same suspicion. I've installed so many stuff as I wanted to try out several possible party compositions, but maybe it would be better to just install two and some friendships and make a new installation once I decide to do another run with another character.
    Just out of curiosity, which NPC mods you've never heard of? I was under the impression that most of my mods are fairly well known.

    @sarevok57
    Thanks for the help. The codes actually work. My journal doesn't update, but Keldorn is in the sewers, I can access the dungeon for the Unseen Eye quest and Arval askes me about my progress. Looks like that did it. I'm still thinking though about a re-install with some less mods now, as I'm afraid with everything I've installed I might run into some other problems along the way, maybe even some game crashing stuff. :/

    Isra off the top of my head. I think I've heard of Sarah and Dace but they're unfamiliar as well. To be fair I tend to be very picky/skeptical about NPC related mods (whether new NPCs or extra content for the Bioware cast) so I tend to not pay much attention when new ones are announced... seen my share of mediocre (or outright bad) examples over the years that ended up being distractions/annoyances more than entertaining, so I tend to refrain from adding such content unless done by modders I trust (though it's a delight when I occasionally stumble across a gem from a relative unknown).
