Poss. fix for game crashing after clicking play

Like a few others I see, I downloaded the game fine, but when I clicked play BGEE would immediately crash.

I checked the Event Log and saw several messages saying a required assembly was missing, Microsoft VC90CRT.

I was able to fix the problem by going to Microsoft.com and downloaded Visual Studio Express 2010. That was overkill - I think all I needed was the Visual C 9.0 runtime library which is installed as part of Visual Studio.

After installing it, the game started up, I was able to create a character and I'm now running around Candlekeep.

I'm running the game in Windows XP.

Thanks Tywin, I just had a look and I also have that error message at the moment! I'm going to try your fix and get back to you.

Ok so I haven't finished the download yet, but this KB article list the exact errors I have been getting both in the event log and when i try to run baldur.exe on its's own:

Does not work for me. Still crashes and I get this error in the Event log :

    baldur.exe
    0.1.0.0
    50b66b64
    ntdll.dll
    6.1.7601.17725
    4ec49b8f
    c0000005
    000343d0
    2410
    01cdcdf0f6f10999
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition\Data\00766\baldur.exe
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ntdll.dll
    35c05ca1-39e4-11e2-b50e-20689d5e5ce5

Dell Alienware Laptop, W7 64, latest drivers for graphics card.
Besides "Run as Admin" I need to set Vista compatibility (service pack 1), Reduced Color Mode and Disable Display Scaling on high dpi settings. Without that, it doesn't even start. BGEE.EXE appears in Task Manager for a few sesonds and then disappears. With the settings it starts, but then baldur.exe crashes as above.
I have also tried to reinstall OpenAl as mentioned in another thread, does not help.

right click on baldur.exe -> select "run with graphical processor" -> select nvidia. Confirmed working on my M14xR2 - had the same error as you before.

Thanks, but Does not help. I had defined this already in the NVidia Control panel. Also there you can connect the Nvidia card to bgee.exe and baldur.exe. Which NVidia driver version are you using ?

Ok, so after some tedious partition merging, I return. And I am very happy to say the installing the Visual C++ 2008 resdistributable (seen as VC90 in the event log) I can finally load the game! Great work for examining the event log @Tywin

EDIT: This solved the "nothing happens when hitting play button" for me, i'm also on XP SP3

One thing that worked for me (I had a crash after pressing play with a reported Windows error which I think related to an ATI driver) was to start the game with iTunes open.

I know it does sound absurd, and that's what I thought when I read this suggestion on the forums, but as unlikely as it may seem, it worked for me after anything else failed.

Hope this will help them to fix this strange bug...

This worked for me on a clean Windows XP Pro VM.

I am using the latest one from Nvidia. Also, it is not enough to set it up in Nvidia control panel, I tried that and it didnt help. When I did it manually how I described above, it actually ran correctly.

Hi Alesthes comment might seem weird but actually it worked for me too. I am on 7 x64 with an ATI card and the event viewer tells me Baldur.exe crashes inside atioglxx.dll. I have tried pretty much every thing mentionned in this forum with no success. Finally I decided to try the itunes impossible solution ( sorry Alesthes, it looks so improbable for a fix) but it does work. I can now see the main menu etc..

Eheh, that's exactly what I thought as well when I read it from someone else!

It seems we were exactly in the same situation: Windows 7 x64, ATI card, same atioglxx.dll related crash. Game works all fine now.

Let's spread the word. At the same time, the bug is so specific and odd that I am sure it won't take much for the developers to find out what is causing it...

My game seems to not start, or if it begins too it crashes instantly. :(

Too bad you can't make pools on this forum. I would ask question: does BG works for you?

So i am also trying to find way to run game...

    Hi,

I am having the same problem with the atioglxx.dll. I have already tried to launch both the BGEE launcher and the Baldur executable with different compatibility settings, as well as running them as administrator, but nothing. I also tried the "Itunes solution", but it still crashes...

The weird thing is that yesterday I had the same exact problem but somehow I managed to run the game by right clicking on the launcher icon and selecting the troubleshot compatibility option. I choose to run the program with the recommended settings (xp service pack 2) and it all worked fine. I therefore, saved those settings but every time I tried to run the game I still had to pass through the "troubleshot compatibility" procedure to let it work.

This morning I did the same exact thing but it seems not to work anymore....

The only difference with Alesthes and altinusd is that I have Windows 7 32 bit instead of 64.

    Any suggestion?

    Thanx!

Same with me. I jumped through hoops to get it to work last night. This morning, those same hoops don't seem to do anything...

I found it relates to the screen resolution.
When I played it with1920x1200 on my Dell M1710, the game always crashed.
But after I changed the resolution to 1680x1050, I can play the game now.
Hope this info could help someone with same issue with mine.

I am sorry the strange but effective (for me...) iTunes solution isn't working for you...

Unfortunately all the other possible solutions I tried yesterday didn't work, so I have no further clue.

Using iTunes is so weird that I cannot understand what exactly it DOES to allow the game to work properly. I guess, obviously, that you already updated all the drivers, as I did. Is your iTunes updated to the latest version? I know that's an even more weird suggestion, but at this point that's the best I and some others have about the atioglxx.dll crash... :(

Your computer screen solution, not the game.

Thank you for your anwer Alesthes!

Yes, everything is updated to the latest version. Eventually, I managed to let it run by downloading and re installing the atioglxx.dll. Now both the launcher and the exe run smoothly, but the intro movie did not display and as soon as I tried to load my previous game it all crashed again. However, this time the issue was related to a stackHash_0a9e fault.... I have just uninstalled the game and I will re download it and install it this evening probably. I'll let you guys know if there will be any improvement.

I have the same problem with the atioglxx.dll file, running on a Win7 64bit laptop. Changing compatibility mode or run as admin didn't work.

Has anyone tried running the game in Virtual PC (windows 98 perhaps)?

I recently installed Win8 so dont have virtual PC installed yet. I usualy run all my old games in win98 where they shine to perfection.

Having same problem as everyone else. Got into the game once, fidling with compability modes and game folder placement. But what works one minut doesnt work the next.

Well the settings mikealpha used worked for me, thanks for that.

Apparently, and I think that apparently should be stressed:), it is all working now.

As I said before, I installed again the atioglxx.dll and it still did not work properly, so I uninstalled the game completely and download and install it again. In the meantime I also re-installed the driver of my graphic board (although it was already up to date before) which I think that basically erased my action of changing the atioglxx. It all seems very weird because I am currently running it with the exact same configuration I had in the first time, using default compatibility mode, but inexplicably it all functions properly now. I tried to load my previous game a few times and I did not encounter problems.

However, I still have not played it for more than 3 minutes so I don't know if it will crash afterwards. Likewise, I don't know if it will still be working tomorrow or the next time I will try to launch it... Anyway, maybe the problem could be that previously I preloaded it and then wait for the last piece of data, whilst now I made the download all in one shot. Or maybe in the meantime they fixed the bug. Probably a wrong explanation, but that's all I can think...

here is how i solved my start issue (caused was my ATI drivers)

-change the location of BG:EE from program files to C:
-unistalled currently drivers ATI of my ATI RADEON HD 5450
-cleaned system from remained drivers with the softwere "driver sweeper"
-installed the new driver downloaded directly from the web site AMD
    -restarted the pc
-finally i set compatibility for windows vista sp1 and run as admin

Now i can play at my favourite game...i'm very happy :D

And I also have the same issue with atioglxx.dll. Under Windows Vista Business (32-bit) (AMD Turion 64 X2, Radeon X2300). Tried with compatibility mode, with lower resolution and/or color depth, with iTunes as described here, and combined... But still without success...

Alesthes, thanks for your help. Yep I tried the itunes solution, tried to install latest video drivers, compatibility mode, change screen resolution, download the file and paste it into c:\windows\systems32 but nothing works. I am really getting frustrated.
It really is sad I can play EVERY game without problems and the GOG version of BG, but not the "enhanced" version. I understand every game has problems first week(s) of launch, but not even succeeding in getting the game started is in my opinion not acceptable. I am losing my confidence in the developing team.
