I'd also note that dying in PST:EE doesn't end your game, in fact it is sometimes necessary to advance the storyline.
Yeah, story mode doesn't really make sense for Planescape:Torment. Although, I suppose they could've made companions have the effects of story mode while leaving the Nameless One vulnerable. I find Planescape:Torment to be easier than the Baldur's Gate series anyway though. It's already more for the story and less about tactically avoiding defeat.
