@Oxford_Guy - you can do this even if you don't give him the scroll. Here is what I did - after you start the game, enter the inn and click on him, that is click #1, he'll give you the quest, then keep clicking on him until you have done so 30 times total (be sure to "end dialogue" each time of course, including click #30), do not exceed this. Then wait, you'll get a logged message saying you've gained 300 gold. If you click on him 31 times, you will not get the gold. I messed this up many times thinking the first click where he gives the quest doesn't count >.<

Thanks, I'll try this.
It worked! This was *before* I'd given him the Identify scroll, thanks! :-)
The Firebeard Gold trick is not location dependant. But you have to remember these rules: Every single time you talk to him (including getting quests) counts towards 30. That also includes previous locations. So as long as you do a grand total of 30 clicks on him and then wait for at least 30 seconds you should get the gold. Generally speaking the easiest way to do the trick is to walk up to him in candlekeep and click on him while counting. When you get to 30 then simply stop for a good long while. If it doesn't show then try clicking him again. If it doesn't work then, it is because you are rubbish at counting :P
@Lifat - you make a good point, but, and I know I probably sound stupid, I had a hard time with this at first, because I thought that my counting should start *after* he gave me the quest, so luckily I had a save before I started clicking. Also, some of us have small children that frequently interrupt our game play and/or make a lot of noise thus distracting us often Just sayin....
True true. I missed it the first time in BG:EE too because of the rather LONG wait for the gold to show up. But after you get the hang of it it doesn't even take long. "Click->press enter->count. Rinse repeat." (I always count when pressing Enter)
