What do you mean with "unfinished SoD character"? What did you try to do, what happened, what game version are you on?

The basic process, in excruciating detail]:
    - Select the Shadows of Amn campaign in BG2EE. Hit "New Game". Then hit the "Import" button:

    - Hit the "Saved Game" button:

    - A list of all your BGEE and SoD saves should pop up. Select one and hit "Load":

    - Select the character you wish to import. Only the characters you created yourself will appear as options, not any of the NPCs you recruited along the way. Hit "Done":

    - Finish up the character creation process; you can tweak appearance, name, and sounds at this stage. Character colors and name will default to what they were in SoD, while you must choose a new soundset as those are different between BGEE and BG2EE.

So, what went wrong? Or does it all make sense now?

All screenshots taken on a Mac, in BG2EE version 2.5. (I've updated to 2.6 for general play, but I keep a copy of 2.5 around for modding purposes)

Thanks but that is what has me baffled. The import screen comes up empty?????

Please post a screenshot what you mean with empty. Where do you have your savegames? Maybe the game doesn't find your SoD saves?

not sure where the save games are

    Hm, that's weird.
For me, the BG:SoD savegames are in C:\Users\Myname\Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition
I'd assume that's hwere th BGII:EE game would look for saves for import?

Weird. My BGEE/SoD saves (more relevant than jastey's, because I'm on a Mac) are in Documents/Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition; that "Documents" is on the iCloud drive, which has a complicated path to its actual local storage location that doesn't really matter. This was all set up automatically during installation, and I didn't change any of the defaults.

Maybe put "MAC" into the thread topic. Lots of Windows users here who can't help with this (me, at least).
