I was undecided how I would define "best/favorite" here.
I decided to go for "convenience": Nashkel is a bit far down south, but it has one shop, one inn for resting, one temple, all on the same area, without having to walk in circles first. I choose Nashkel.
Agreed. Beregost simply has too much "filler" content. First time players can potentially get bogged down in some of the game's worst content right at the start. Nashkel is much more pared down but also more smartly designed.
I love Gullykin as an idea but it's got so little going for it, it's an unfortunate wasted opportunity. Ulgoth would be my second behind Nashkel.
Nashkel is great because it packs a lot of worldbuilding in its nameless NPCs. Amnian soldiers, merchants and townsfolk all make the looming threat of war feel more real, and therefore give weight to Sarevok's scheme. The Carnival is also an interesting, historically appropriate site and not frequently explored as a setting in games.
