Determine if Windows Ransomware Protection (WRP) is interfering with your game or save game file access.
Make sure your virus scanner isn’t blocking the game from starting.
Re-install OpenAL. OpenAL is a support library that is used for audio in games:
OpenAL - https://www.openal.org/downloads/
Infinity Engine games 2.6 or later - Run the OpenAL installer - oalinst.exe - in the root of your game install folder.
Neverwinter Nights - Run the OpenAL installer - oalinst.exe - included with your installation of NWN in the bin\win32 folder.
Steam - Check the integrity of your game install. Right-click the game in your Steam Library and select Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Cache...
Reinstall the game. Try choosing an install folder that is not within Program Files or Program Files (x86).
Restart the computer.
Run Windows Update and check for updates. Windows Update can be found in Settings.
Ensure you have the latest .NET Framework installed. .NET is a software framework from Microsoft and usually delivered via Windows Updates.
Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card:
AMD - https://www.amd.com/en/support
Intel - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/
NVIDIA - https://www.geforce.com/drivers
Re-install DirectX:

Infinity Engine games - If you have a Mobile Intel 4 series or Intel HD 3000 graphics chipset, you will need to edit or create the following setting in your Baldur.lua settings file. Go to C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\[Game Name Folder]\
SetPrivateProfileString('Graphics','Backend','1')
Infinity Engine games - Try deleting the game's configuration settings. Go to C:\Users\[Username]\Documents\[Game Name Folder] and delete either the Baldur.ini or Baldur.lua configuration files, whichever ones you have.
Your computer desktop display might be set to 16-bit color; 32-bit color is required. This setting can be found in your Display Properties.
If none of the above helps, you may need to add the game to your system's list of DEP exceptions.
Open the Control Panel.
Select the System item.
Select Advanced system settings from the left column.
On the Advanced tab, choose the Settings... option in the Performance group.
Select the Data Execution Protection tab.
Click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:
Click Add. Browse to the game's install folder, find the executable file for the program, and then click Open.
Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog.*
