What’s your endgame choice?

What do you usually choose at the end of the saga?

No god for me, as the idea of being a god of murder bothers me. I’d much rather be a mass-murdering mortal. 🙂

To be honest I don’t have a preference: I’ll keep a save before the final battle at the Throne and choose which of the two fates seem reasonable at the time.

I’ve never done an evil walkthrough though: it just doesn’t fit the character types I like to play. It would involve certain dialogue types throughout TOB that I’m not willing to try.

I usually choose no god, as that seems the best choice really.

I can't honestly answer, because it depends on the playthrough. The last three runs I've seriously gotten into (all in the playthrough forum) have led to an evil god of murder (Dorn leading an evil party), a non-evil god of fire (dragon disciple leading a fire-focused run), and a mortal (fighter/thief leading a no-spellcasting run).

Actually, in all these runs, I tend to rewrite the companion epilogues when I finish. Sure, the ones included with the game are decent starting points, but those characters in my head have grown and changed in ways the game's writers didn't predict. And they're not just going to ignore each other completely when their big adventure is done.

"Evil" ascension (despite good intentions) just feels like the canon ending of the saga for me. Not only because Bhaal does reappear in later FR publications, but more because it adds a tragic dimension to all the talk about fate and destiny. It cannot be that easy to subvert the essence of a God through nurture, otherwise Bhaal's whole original plan makes precious little sense. Good ascension is Mary Sue-ish wish fulfillment; it should never have been included and runs counter to these themes of the saga. Better yet, it should be a trick option ultimately leading to the same outcome. Now that would be a great mod - the Solar as Bhaal's ultimate ruse. The only truly good ending is rejection, like Conan laughing in the face of destiny and walking away from the throne he conquered.

If you've done tons of playthroughs but never an evil one, I highly recommend doing so. Even more so with the EE added companions, as they allow you to fill your BG2 party with evil companions now.

It's tricky at times, and definitely an increase in the game's difficulty. But any diehard fan of the game will be rewarded by seeing alot of dialogue and outcomes you've never seen before. And even more true in the late game, ToB content, as discussed here.
