Valygar missing

FredNFredN Member Posts: 551
.....I met Rasaad in Trademeet, and decided to do his quest. I removed Valygar from the party in order to make room for him. We proceeded to finish Rasaad's Questline, and I chose the option to have him replace the Combat Master, which makes him unavailable until ToB. Obviously, I was planning to add Valygar back to my team.
.....A bit of a problem now arises, however. I forgot where I told him to go! :o I scoured every inch of the Trademeet streets; no Valygar. I then checked the Copper Coronet; nada. I even went back to his cabin in the Umar Hills; empty. I'm pretty sure I didn't tell him to totally get lost forever.
.....So, dumb question, but can anyone think of some other place he might have ended up?

Possibly outside the Sphere if you've not done that quest?

No we did that long ago. His default spot to go is his cabin, but I checked there. There are only so many places he could be. I checked all of Trademeet, and the Copper Coronet. I can't think of any other place I could have told him to go and wait. Yeah, I'm an idiot for not noting it down somewhere, but it is what it is. :(

Valygar's default place to go is his cabin. However, under some circumstances, Valygar can go to his home in Athkatla. That's the docks district; one of the buildings on the second tier.

Ah! OK, I didn't think to check there. I'll give it a look.

OK, that was a good thought, but alas, he's not there either. Is it possible I accidentally dismissed him for good? Other than his cabin, his house in the docks area, Trademeet and the Copper Cpronet, I can't think of any place else I could have told him to wait. Most perplexing.

Did you have very low reputation when you dismissed him?

On the contrary; our Rep was at 15.

You can check your save file in NearInfinity to find where Valygar ended up. Don’t worry — we won’t be editing anything, just looking. If you already have NearInfinity set up, here’s what to do:
    1. Open your save. (in the Save folder)
    2. Select baldur.gam.
    3. In the Non-Player characters list, search for *Alyg. (there are a few versions of Valygar, so don’t worry about the number at the end)
    4. Click on him and click View/Edit.
    5. You’ll see his current area and below that the exact coordinates within that area. (if for some reason you don't, make sure you're looking at the Game Stats tab)
    6. If the area name isn’t familiar, you can either look it up online or open it directly in NearInfinity. Click View Area, and you might recognize it visually. Moving your mouse around will also help match the coordinates to a location on the map.

If you don't have NearInfnity and feel uncomfortable trying out new software, you can always upload your save here and hope someone else is kind (and brave) enough to check for you.

I am very much not a techhie, so thatNearInfinity thing is not for me. In fact, I have no idea where to even find the game files. Can you enlighten me?

It varies by operating system and slightly by install, of course. But somewhere on your computer, there's an area where files associated with a particular user account go. And the program creates a folder there - it'll be called "Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition". That folder will contain a "save" subfolder, along with other stuff like the "Baldur.lua" file and folders for "portraits" and "characters".
The game itself may also appear as a folder of the same name, in whatever area applications go. That's not what you want here. If you see folders like "data" and "movies" and "music", you're in the wrong place. No saves there.
Inside the "save" folder, there will be a bunch of subfolders, each named with a nine-digit number followed by words that are the actual save name. Each one of those subfolders is a save; to upload it here, you compress (zip) that folder and attach it to a post.

Thank you for the information. I don't have winZip so I can't do that. I will just have to bite the bullet here, I guess.
Note: I do have an old, old save from way back in chapter 2 when I first recruited Valygat. I loaded it, then reformed the party, telling him to leave. There were literally only 3 choices for where to send him. Stay here, go to your cabin, go to the Copper Coronet. I have checked all the places multiple times, with no luck.
