The HPS Portraits Project v1.0

After a very long wait, we are pleased to finally announce our portrait mod: The HPS Portraits Project.

This project was previously known as Portraits Portraits Everywhere RELOADED, which was really just a pet project I had started a few years back. At that time, the "mod" simply involved manually updating or adjusting portraits contained in Smeagolheart and bob_veng's very popular Portraits Portraits Everywhere mod.

Ptifab and The_Sextein have since come on board, and their contributions have brought this project to an entirely new level. The result is a standalone mod incorporating a complete collection of portraits and a wide range of optional installations based on user preference.

This is a comprehensive portrait pack that covers the entire saga (BG1, BG2, TOB) and beyond. When all components are installed, every single NPC in the entire game will be assigned a high quality portrait, specifically tailored with regard to appearance, environment, and dialog.

Some of the unique features of this mod:

1. All Portraits are AI generated. No unauthorized artwork was used in this mod.

2. Portraits are individually tailored to each NPC based upon careful review of race, class, appearance, and dialog, with a consistent art style throughout.

3. Portraits cover both the entire trilogy and a number of popular quest and NPC mods, and will be ever expanding.

4. De-cloning feature resolves issues arising with the games' tendency to spawn cloned NPCs with identical portraits to populate certain areas.

The HPS Portraits Project has been developed for the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition and The Enhanced Edition Trilogy games.

At this time, this mod is only available to PC users for the Steam or GOG versions of the trilogy. We would recommend you updating both games to version 2.6.6 at a minimum.

Unzip all content from the zip file into your "Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition" or "Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition" main folder. If you are running EET, install the mod into the "Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition" main folder only.

Then run "setup-hps_portrait_project. exe" and install all components needed, following the instructions.

**IMPORTANT**

1. If you are running an EET install, then it is recommended to install the mod as late as possible, and AFTER the installation of EET_End. This will allow for easy uninstalls/reinstalls when new versions are released, without disturbing your save games. Each time this mod is uninstalled/reinstalled, portraits should update automatically in game.

2. For all quest mod portraits, please ensure that all quest mods are installed BEFORE you run this mod. The Weidu will only install portraits for quest mod .cre files that are detected in the override folder. Keeping this mod late in the install order (preferably last) will ensure that those files are fully present when they are updated or overwritten.

3. We recommend that you NOT install the Tweaks Anthology component "commoners use drab colors" if you intend to use commoner portraits for this mod. The commoner portraits are tailored towards the vanilla avatars only, so if that component is installed you will see color inconsistencies. The same applies for any mods which alter avatar colors or general appearances. While the mod will still install normally, you may see inconsistencies.

4. We did our best to match portrait appearances with the respective avatars, including color coordination. That said, SOA and TOB rely heavily upon randomized colors, even for some important NPCs. As such, you WILL experience color mismatches with those NPCs and there is nothing we can do about it at this point unfortunately. We may address this in future updates.

Components:

1. "Add missing Portraits to Base Game Unique NPCs"

This is the main component and covers portraits for all major NPCs with dialog.

2. "Add missing Portraits to Minor and Common NPCs"

This component will install all the portraits to minor or generic NPCs, like commoners or soldiers.

3. "Add missing Portraits to Monsters and other Specials NPCs"

This component updated portraits for monsters and other specific NPCs not covered by the other two components.

4. "Add new Portraits to Throne of Bhaal NPCs"

This component replaces all Throne of Bhaal's main characters portraits: Abazigal, Balthazar, Gromnir, Melissan, Sendai and Yaga-Shura.

5. "De-clone area's common NPCs and add Unique Portraits to them"

This component addresses the game's tendency to rely upon "cloned" NPCs to populate crowded areas. The game's coding would take a base NPC and spawn clones in certain areas, typically cities and taverns, resulting in groups of identical NPCs within the same immediate area. In the vanilla game, this was not an issue given that these clones did not display portraits. But if portraits are assigned, it is quite jarring to encounter close groups of NPCs with the same avatars and portraits.

This component addresses the situation by replacing the cloned NPCs with unique NPCs, each with an individualized portrait. We highly recommend that this component is installed if component #2 is installed.

6. "Add new portraits to original party NPCs"

This component will add new portraits to the original joinable NPCs (Aerie, Anomen, Imoen, etc.). This component was added in recognition that the original Bioware portraits have inconsistent artwork styles with the mod portraits.

Completely optional component, in recognition that many players have attachments to the original portraits and will want to maintain them in their games. We hope you enjoy our interpretations, however.

7. "Add missing Portraits to Mod NPCs"

This component works in two steps: Auto-detection or Manual Installation

The auto-detection option automatically detects and installs new portraits for the mods you have installed.

The manual installation option lets you select each mod for which you want to add new portraits individually.

Whichever option is selected, the installer will also need to specify whether to maintain original party NPC portraits for each mod. If component #6 was installed, it is recommended that the mod party NPC portraits also be installed for quest mods to maintain consistency.

Additionally, the user will need to select whether to replace the original portraits in each quest mod. We recognize that the authors of each quest mod, as well as users, may wish to maintain those portraits for each mod. As such, we included an option to keep the original portraits and only assign portraits to those NPCs without a portrait.

If manual install is selected, then the Weidu will run through the above options for each quest mod detected.
