Is there somewhere I can store the stuff I don’t want to carry that it won’t get stolen?

I know it despawns if left outside.

Any container on any map can be a place to stash things. That is, all the little highlight things that show up when you press tab, when you mouse over them they should get a "chest" tool tip. That indicates a container you can open, and stash whatever you want.
Obviously, you'll want to chose a container someplace you will *remember* you are using as a stash point. Probably in the Friendly Arm Inn or someplace in Beregost are most popular places for most of the game.

Awesome! I didn't realize perpetual storage was available so easily.

Question 2 - If I put something in a box and leave for Part 4 will it still be there in part 6?

    Thanks

Yes, all the containers permanently save their contents. In BG2 I'd assume most people use the copper coronet or your stronghold

Doh, yes. I missed the BG2 part. Strongholds and Copper Coronet are surely most popular.

Just be aware that in some indoor areas, opening a chest might count as an attempt to steal from it and soldiers might spawn.
I am always rather reluctant to open chests in inns or private homes..
