Neverwinter Nights 2: What's happening/happened to it?

I heard a lot of rumour floating around the internet like "The source code has been lost, so there's no chance of an Enhanced Edition", etc. etc.

Is this true?

For 4K resolution, the game is starting to suffer a bit, even with HD UI mods installed.

There's lots of potentail still there for the game to be updated, but it doesn't look like it ever has been for years.

I don't know about the status, but perhaps GemRB could offer flexibility in this regard, a bit like ScummVM helps with even older (adventure) games. They seem to have progressed most so far in regards to Icewind Dale: https://gemrb.org/News.html

I don't know how flexible the game engine is though; haven't tested it myself yet due to lack of time primarily, but I may give it a test at some later point in time.

I answered this in another thread, but I will answer it here too. Neverwinter Nights 2 was developed by Obsidian Entertainment which, as far as I know, had been acquired by Microsoft Gaming Studios. From what I understand, the source code is not lost. It just seems that Microsoft hasn't done anything with the game as of yet. Your best bet would be to try contacting Microsoft Gaming Studios directly and inquire about Neverwinter Nights 2 since (again, as far as I know) it is a Microsoft Gaming Studios game now.

@Trouveur The same company that acquired Beamdog, the developers of NWN: EE, back in 2022. Isn't that ironic?
@JuliusBorisov Are you as shocked as I am? Does this mean there is a possibility that former Aspyr Media/Beamdog employees will get their old jobs back? Believe me, I know all too well what it's like to find yourself suddenly unemployed. It sucks. Hopefully, this will be an opportunity for lives to flourish.

Edit: Wait a second. How can Aspyr Media be developing NWN2: EE when Microsoft Gaming Studios owns the company that originally developed NWN2? Did Microsoft buy Aspyr Media/Beamdog from Embracer, or did Embracer purchase Obsidian Entertainment from Microsoft?
