Anomen is dual class and has warrior health and skills, so he can be in the front if needed. Viconia is not going to be leading the charge and swinging away at things, unless the you-know-what hits the fan. I do give her a belt of giant strength and the Flail of Ages, so if indeed we are pressed badly, she can do some physical damage. Additionally, my thief of choice, once Yoshimo vanishes, is Hexxat. Anomen and Hexxat do not play nice together. Finally, Anomen's personality I find grating and annoying. Viconia is soft-spoken and calming to the nerves.
Yeah, I also found Anomen too annoying compared to Viconia. I play mostly with mods, where Viconia has more extended storyline parts in the Underground. I think nobody made any mod for Anomen; if true then nobody likes him.
Hexxat is ok-ish but I found her to be lacking in regards to strength compared to other characters. I usually take Jan; Breach is neat from the backrow.
Playing in Vanilla I find to be a bit too boring these days though. There are some small and great quests, such as from Lava; I usually tend to go to the Southern Block before even starting the questlines in the Copper Coronet. In Throne of Bhaal it is even more problematic in that everything is streamlined towards reaching the final part; in SoA there is a bit more freedom to choose and pick what to do, even in the Vanilla game.
"Hexxat is ok-ish but I found her to be lacking in regards to strength compared to other characters"
.....She's a Vampire! I assume you aren't talking about physical strength, since hers is 20. But more to the point, when fighting Bhodi and her crew, she cannot be level drained. She is also 100% immune to poison, and regenerates health if wounded. She also cannot be killed permanently, since none of the enemies you face carry wooden stakes. At worst, she'll turn to mist and pop back the next day. You will have to pick up her dropped gear, of course, but that's what her casket is for.
.....Since her class is thief, no, she doesn't have a ton of health, but neither does any pure thief. If you are having her standing in the front ranks and swinging away, you aren't using her properly. She has vampiric abilities like Domination, blood drain, and summoning the "children of the night". These are pretty weak initially, but as she gains levels, she ends up being able to summon things like Shadows. Give her some invisibility and let her backstab. When she gets HLA's, aside from use any item, give her assassinate. If you have time to prepare for a fight, have her drop some traps in strategic spots. By the time you get to ToB, her spike traps can one-shot Fire Giants.
.....The biggest problem with Jan is that he's multiclass; Hexxat gains levels 2x as quickly. Jan will take quite a while to get those sweet HLAs. Jan doesn't have a great amount of health either ... making him a bit fragile ... and Edwin is a better mage overall. IMO, Hexxat + Edwin are better than, say, Jan + Imoen. As always, ymmv, depending on who else you have in your crew. You are not going to be able to have certain combos. Edwin and Neera, Hexxat and Keldorn, etc. are all no go.
::sigh::
Just when I thought I was making headway clearing out the quest backlog, Edwin pulls another quest out of his .... err, hat ... and the location's down in some gods-forsaken crypt. I have spent enough time in musty tombs doing Hexxat's tasks for "L". Sheesh!

He crushes her in fighting 10/10 times.
