Doubts with companions

Hi.

I have a question... I'd like to play this game right away because I always start it and don't get past Coalition Camp because it makes me yawn 😅. But still want to complete it at least once. The thing is, I want to play it with a group entirely mine, not Neera, Dorn, that goblin, and so on, because I prefer to play my own characters and I'm not into romances or any of that mess. But I would like to do their quests. Is it feasible? I mean, temporarily putting them in my group to complete their quests and then kicking them out. That's what I did in BG, I wonder if I can do the same here.

Some of the NPC quests don’t even need them in the party, you can just talk to the characters around the camp or wherever you meet them. Other’s need them with you for encounters. But I don’t think any of them are *important* per se. I often run with just three NPCs (and 3 OCs) and I don’t think I miss anything of importance.

It is sort of funny for me to say this. I think the NPCs had a *huge* amount of character and ambiance to the core games. But with few exceptions (Dynaheir!) I think the characters and story are the significant weak part of SoD. Some of the combat and encounter construction is brilliant, the art design is gorgeous.

Well, to be completely honest, I consider SoD an unnecessary addition to the series and I'll probably play it with a sense of disdain and boredom. I've had the game for years and it's been rotting, but I want to play it since I spent the money. 🤦🏻‍♂️

However, I did like the Black Pits.

Just my advice, but if you're struggling to get to the end of the game, you should skip the sidequests. You should just ignore the companions for the most part, play the game in the icewind dale style and beat it. I don't think the companion quest stuff is hugely rewarding if you don't keep them in your party.

I think it's worth it for a veteran of the IE games and a fan of the combat system to complete the main plot. Do the large sidequests. But especially by the time you get to the coalition camp, just beeline the main plot. I mean if you end up liking the game, you can always come back in a few years and do a completionist run. But trying to do it while juggling a full custom party sounds like it will add alot of tedium for you with not much payoff.

The combats and encounters in the main plot are worth experiencing for vets, even if the game's plot isn't all that great.

Don't worry, it's already completed. Well I did some of the quests, was not that bad. I did the same with BG2 new NPC quests in the past days, only problem is now I have 1 character with lower level than the rest but no big deal 🙃.
