A very silly dilemma: should I keep rolling?

OssoryOssory Member Posts: 56
Inspired by one of you (can't remember which one though) I decided to start a solo HC insane game. I've been rolling an F/M/T for a couple of days now (I know it doesn't sound very smart) and I couldn't get the stats I deemed tolerable. I wanted to go for 18, 19, 17, 18, 3, 18 (Elf), so 93 overall (15,5 avg) but after 4 days of rolling still no luck.

However (and here's the dilemma part), I managed to roll 18/00 with other stats decent as well (19, 17, 18, 3, 15). I know Charisma 18 is not really crucial but I just like the feeling of having 5 stats maxed out. So now I don't know what to do. For a solo HC game 18/00 is really nice and I would really hate to lose it but a voice inside keeps telling me to keep rolling and hope for 18/91, 19, 17, 18, 3, 18 ;D

Also, I swear the above didn't sound that ridiculous before I actually typed it out.

93 isnt that bad. Hard to believe its taken so long. Roll til you get the stats you want, but remember that if you use the Tome for an extra point of strength, your 18/xx doesnt matter. I got a 96 point character with an 18/13 and I played it because I knew I would raise it.

You find a tome of strength in BG:EE so just pick 18 to start out, and enjoy 19 later on

18/00 with charisma 15 is better than any other str score with CHA 18.

Yup. When I finally got good enough stats to be able to dual my fighter to druid (100?!), I didn't care that his xx was 18/07.

If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend the work of @Ravel. He put together a utility that automatically adds up your roll for you and tells you your xx score without having to fill str first. It can be found here:

If you enjoy the hunt for the perfect roll, keep on rolling!
If you want to earn it by playing, start a game, make it your solo mission to acquire the STR tome, export, import, and start over.
Othewise, just use the console and max out your stats in the blink of an eye.

Hm, I don't really get it. I mean I know why it's supposed to be funny, and I get the punchline, but I agree 100% with the ginger girl o.O

True but since I plan on playing solo HC, I'm afraid I might not make it to the Tome without the 18/00 which is a huge bonus. I'm quite worried about the beginning.

See, the thing is I *know* you're right, it makes sense and it's wonderfully logical, however, you can't be more wrong at the same time. It's hell in my head right now.

About that 18 Charisma... keep in mind that the lv1 mage spell Friends gives you a +5 Charisma boost. So you don't need to max that stat if you have that spell recorded in your spellbook.

I guess I'll keep rolling. Even though 57% of the voters think ill of my intelligence.

Hm, it may be difficult to explain but for me it's not about the short-term effect, like casting Friends before negotiating for a quest reward, it's more about the knowledge that when I press R at any given time, I'll see awesome stats providing me with a virtual pat on the back.

I guess I may require medical attention.

I just did ~9200 rolls for a swashbuckler, my highest roll was 92 which I got after like 400 rolls.
It's a lot harder to get high rolls when you have a couple of stats that can get a really low roll.
(Didn't take me more then ~50 rolls to get 94 on Chevalier)

Are you planning to play with one of the most awesome (and perhaps overpowered) items in the game? The one found in Beregost as early as you want to get there? If so it comes with a +2 charisma (and unlimited charm spells) so you could settle for the 18/00 roll and with the tome get 18 effective charisma -

Of course if you hold out for the 93 you would have an effective 20 charisma (21 with the tome) but it's highly unlikely the 93 is going to come with that 18/00 and the strength tome is found late in the game.

    Dilemma indeed... I am currently playing a CN FMT in a group with a 90 - 18/50, 19, 16, 18, 11, 8

So I decided to mess around rolling an elf f/m/t. About 400 rolls in, got a 93 with an 18/89. So it can happen, keep going and dont give up!

For my current BGEE CHARNAME's stats I went with my 3rd roll (I limited myself to 10), got 85 points, which is perfectly adequate (although an not soloing, so arguably Charisma will be more important for the OP):

    Str 18/49
    Dex 18
    Con 17 (elf max)
    Int 18
    Wis 6
    Cha 8 (elf min)

Shame I missed the 18/50, but will boost to 19 with a tome eventually, and Strength spell will give me 18/99 anyway).

Dex could've been 19, but will be after the Dex tome and 20 is no better than 19 for a F/M

Wis was my main dump stat, but I still wanted some semblance of Wis for RP reasons, and hope to bring it up to at least 8 with Tomes

    She's an elf fighter/mage

No, this takes all things in to account. This is the probability of scoring these across 18 dice. It's completely accurate. Besides, minimum requirements don't change probability. These are your odds with any creature that has as many penalties as they do bonuses, though you can correct for discrepancies by adding and subtracting the difference from your total to find your new probability. That is to say if you gain 2 in racial bonuses in one area and only lose 1 in penalties you'd subtract 1 from your total to find your probability.

Just as a demonstration you can do this sum yourself - your odds of getting straight 18s is 1/6^18 or 1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6*1/6.

18/00 is too good. If you could only manage middling charisma with the other stats maxed, I'd be tempted to keep rolling, but you've already got great charisma. Start the game already.
  • MERLANCEMERLANCE Member Posts: 421
I kept rolling a few thousand more times with the elf F/M/T. Didnt see another 93, or a 94, a 95, a 96, or a 97, then I got a 98... and rolled right through it. Would have been nice to solo with one in The Black Pits (You can hit level 8/9/10 there, 166666xp per class)

.. and after he rolls perfect stats, dies 1 hour later to pack of kobolds.
  • PantalionPantalion Member Posts: 2,137
    @ElizabethSterling

What Ossory is referring to is a class minimum. Since a character's minimum score may be a 15 in a prime requisite, this means that any score between 3 & 14 automatically becomes a 15. This means, effectively, that if a class has one minimum stat of 15 then the chance of getting 105 becomes a matter of rolling a 90 on 5 dice sets, rather than 105 on 6 dice sets. For multiclasses with high minimums across the board, like the Ranger cleric, 100+ becomes drastically more likely, because the system cheats the results upwards (making a 3/18/18/18/18/3 a viable 100+ roll when otherwise it would be a 78).

If the game rolled dice fairly, you would be correct, but it doesn't.
