Well, because of the fact the Phaerimm first appeared in the 2nd edition for the Forgotten Realms setting and also appeared in the 3rd edition for the Forgotten Realms setting, they will suit greatly.
It will be great to have an area (or several areas) as an expansion where you have to confront them. New monsters in general will bring something new to this game, so it's a great idea.
Or something like beholders VS the Phaerimm fights... It will be a show not to be missed!
Also, I forsee a certain beholder on this forum (hint, hint) will be highly interested....
I forsee a certain mummy on this forum (hint, hint again) will also be involved because the undead creatures are immune to the Phaerimm's mind-control magic.
The other thing I forsee someone or even several people on this forum will soon change their avatars to the Phaerimm...
And at last, I forsee someone on this forum will soon speak as the Phaerimm although they communicate with one another by varying the wind speed around their bodies and with other creatures by means of telepathy...
I would love to see them. Their spell turning ability should be easy to convert to BG2. They are nasty, deadly critters though, they have real scary abilities!
I think the location of Myth Rhynn, the elven tomb of the Wealdath (north-east of Suldanessellar) would be a good location for them to pop up near. Since Myth Drannor and Evereska are too removed from the BG1 and BG2 maps, and the underdark is already full of enough monsters. There could be a quest built around the lich Mallin and the Phaerimm feeding off that corrupted mythal.
Wouldn't work....the city of Shade doesn't shatter the Sharn Wall until 2 1/2 years after ToB ends, the Phaerimm are still trapped in the Anauroch desert.
Pesonally, I'd like to see some other iconic high level abominations, such as Hecatoncheires, Phanes and Atropals. Gibbering orbs are cool too, and perhaps the faerun specific worm that walks.
And lets not forget the various devastation vermin.

Their names are mentioned in the first book you find for Pylhdiya in Candlekeep. They are historical, legendary, dreaded monsters.

I don't know there are plenty of annoying mind controlling creatures in the game already.
