  The default place when you make a thread (unless you are in general when you click the "New Discussion" button) is the New Members Welcome Area. I've had it happen before too (before the New Members Welcome Area existed it was never a problem).

Perhaps it'd be a good idea to consolidate and sticky a post with each and every pop culture reference, easter egg and idiosyncrasy that was ever up for debate, as these threads keep popping up once their predecessors go toward the archives.
