CON definitely, DEX would be how much you avoid stuff thrown at you and how good you are at throwing stuff.

But I think the 100 meter dash is used for dex as well :/

Yeah, but just how much time it takes you to ;) and CON would be running a mile without getting tired of something like that.

That was the idea, how fast you ran a mile.

I'd say that Dexterity is probably involved in both sprints and distance running, with Strength being the other factor in a sprint and Constitution in distance.

Look at 100 metre sprinters. They have thighs like treetrunks and the rest of their musculature matches. Sprints are about maximum acceleration, requiring a lot of strength but also the dextrous control to turn it into effective speed. Stumbling out of the starting blocks seems pretty common when I watch athletics.

Distance has a lot of variety. I run on roads, rough paths, grass, hills, everywhere. For me, dexterity or agility plays a part in avoiding tree roots, head-height branches, staying upright on icy pavements and that sort of thing. On an athletic track these sort of hazards don't happen so dexterity would be less important, though still a factor in pacing yourself, leaning into sharp turns etc but constitution or endurance would predominate.

    Sooo.. Yes?

For a one mile run on level ground with no obstancles I'd be tempted to say that Con is the primary stat. You'd reach maximum speed within the first 15 seconds which is predominately strength, the rest would be mainly pacing and endurance which are likely governed by Con.

As with anything though, it's a spectrum in real life.

Hmm It is personal, however I always think helping beggar or not should tell a lot about a man. If spare coin then good dude, if not then neutral.
  • meaglothmeagloth Member Posts: 3,806
@Teflon‌, I don't believe I have a question relating to beggars. I thing you may be looking at the original, not the revised edition in the spoiler towards the bottom of the page. I agree, and if I left that in there then that was an oversight on my part.

Ugh. I hate all those choices! What happened to 1) Turn the guy over to the police with proof of what he did. Let the courts sort it out. 2) Have him tell the law what he did and forget the $5000- how is a bribe supposed to make me feel better? Having my conviction expunged would be better! 3) Work with the village to defend it. 4) Escape your home with the diamond. Go to the law. and 5) Go to appeals court. If you bought the painting/obtained it legally, you'll have proof of ownership.

So, where do I stand on your spiteful/forgiving chart? Also, some of those "questions" have nothing to do with being forgiving, especially the robbers breaking into your home one. How does giving them the jewel they are looking for specifically tie into being "forgiving"?

Same with the barbarian invasion scenario- it has nothing to do with being spiteful or forgiving- it's being nice or being a bunghole. For the last one, you aren't even saying the painting was owned by you, it's just "Your favorite". My favorite painting is the Mona Lisa. I don't care that a museum owns it.

This is the problem in coming up with a "Third axis". Your questions don't even all speak to that supposed axis, and the answers don't often make sense. I can forgive someone while still wanting to see them face the legal consequences of their actions. Lawful people think that the laws should be followed- forgiveness doesn't imply that you think the person should be spared the consequences of breaking the law. You can still forgive someone personally and allow the law to put them in jail because of their misdeeds.

In your second scenario- the person offering you money is bribing you to forget that he did you wrong in a legal sense. But by going to jail, he's damaged your reputation, because you're known as a lawbreaker/criminal. I don't see how a bribe is supposed to get him out of the consequences of what he did. Even if it's his last/only $5000, it's still a bribe. My reputation is worth more to me than $5000. It's not a case of me being spiteful, wanting him to clear my record. It's a matter of what's right.

This thread has been merged with Meagloth's Alignment Test thread.
  • meaglothmeagloth Member Posts: 3,806
@LadyRhian‌ while I mean no offense, I find it rather aggravating and frustrating that you merged my threads. I would have liked them to remain a separate discussions. It's now quite confusing as to what this thread is about, and I do not really want my third axis to play a large role is my test. In the test it was just 5 silly questions you could ignore, Now it's the topic of the thread. And I realize that the barbarian invasion question doesn't have anything to do with spite, it's more of a good/evil question. I did say it wasn't perfect.
And in my defense, in 1, that's what the first to options are. It's about how you do, sorry if this isn't clear. In 2, if the bribe doesn't make you feel better, than don't take it. 3, that's pretty much on and two. 4, I think fight back was an option. Remember this type of question isn't to see how clever you are at defending your home from thieves, it's to see how you feel about handing over something you love. The hypothetical question is not really even meant to see what you would actually do, it's to see what option you pick. 5, very similar to 4, he's already won it in court. This is hypothetical. you live in injusticestan, and there's no such thing as an appeals court.

If the point of question 4 is about losing something you love, then make it about that. And if the Barbarian Invasion question is more about good and evil, why use it in a test of your third axis? That just doesn't make sense if you are using it to test the for position on the third axis (as you claimed the five questions were supposed to test this third axis in people responding to your post).

Anyhow, I merged them because you already mentioned the third axis in the other thread. And no one responded to that post. So I felt it would be better contained within the original discussion (where you posed the third axis to begin with).

I think good and evil are perfectly fine axes to put alignment in. I don't feel there is a need for a third axis that somehow needs to be defined separate from the first two. Evil people tend to be more selfish because their focus is on themselves rather than others- but it's not an absolute. Good people can be selfish (I do good because it gets me something I want/need). They may appear to be selfless, but in reality, they are not.

And in the last example, if I live in Injusticestan, I'd work to make it Justicestan and get my stuff back that way. This example also has nothing to do with being forgiving. It has more to do with "how do you deal with injustice?"- more on the Chaotic/Lawful axis than anything else (Chaotic is "Screw the law, get my item back my way." and Lawful would be either "work within the law to get your item back or simply accept what happened because it was the law." Since you are not in a position to forgive the court, and the option is not to forgive the person who stole your item from you (or paradoxically, not to forgive them and bear a grudge), it has nothing to do with forgiveness. Similar to "good does not equal stupid", the level of forgiveness shouldn't turn someone into a carpet to be walked over by anybody- and that's what several of the "Forgiving" answers imply. Personally, I also find the test too limited. If you have to choose an answer and all the answers are bad or nothing that I would do, it doesn't help. Already three of the five questions don't really have much to do with forgiveness or whether you are a forgiving person.

A more accurate "to forgiveness/vengefulness" sort of questions would be, with #5: Someone manages to take away an item from you by more or less legal means. At some point afterwards, he has a change of heart and returns the item to you. Do you: Accept the item, but tell everyone he's a thief of sorts and not to be trusted? (Vengeful/Unforgiving), Accept the item and. in telling the story of what happened, mention his change of heart and say he may have been bad at one time, but now has clearly changed, refusing to bad-mouth him or gossip about what he did? (Forgiving) Not accept the item back and call him a thief and a liar to anyone who will listen? (Actively vengeful).

With #3: A barbarian band conquers a nearby village. They are later thrown out as conquerors and you are sent to try and make the two sides come to a deal so that further conflict can be avoided. Do you: Penalize the Barbarian tribe for all future generations with punitive measures that may/will incur resentment? (Vengeful) Seek to banish them from the area so that they cannot do such a thing ever again? (Unforgiving) Or work with both sides to seek a lasting peace, perhaps having the Barbarian tribe provide a service to the village for some time/make up for damages done and reparations? (Forgiving)

#4 Thieves come into your house and steal a prized possession. Eventually, the gang is tracked down and one of them turns informer and tells authorities where the loot, including your item, is hidden. Because you are an important person in town/the area, you get to determine the fate of the informer. Do you: Pardon him from the crimes of his/her fellows? (Forgiving) Lump him/her in with the rest? (Unforgiving) Demand that s/he and his/her compatriots all be put to death for their crimes? (Vengeful)

See, these get directly to the problem of being forgiving or not. I included a "vengeful" option because you did also, not because I feel it is on the axis of "forgiving" exactly.

    @meagloth‌

True Neutral Human Mage here according to your test. INT 18, but the rest of the stats are too embarrassing to mention.

Does this sound like what you have read of me? XD

@jackjack‌ if you score in spiteful and forgiving equally then that's vengeful :) and yea, you suggestion makes sense. Celebrity has a lot of negative connotations. I'm glad you got bard though, I was worried that it was too hard to score for it.

@meagloth does every one of your spoiler windows contain the full test? If not, where should I start?
  • meaglothmeagloth Member Posts: 3,806
@Sjerrie‌ it the one in the OP that says test right before it.

I enjoy these tests. A few online versions for alignment and even class and stats exist too, but I cannot find the links at the moment. :-( I will dig for them some more. Also fun. Does anyone else struggle with BG rewards, penalties, and lack of penalties for characters and parties of good alignment? I equate killing for personal gain as evil and stealing for personal gain as neutral or worse. Chaotic Good might "borrow" something they would find useful, perhaps believing that things really ought to belong to everyone (or no one), but then should be just as likely to give something away to someone else who might find it useful. Yes? Stealing from the rich to give to the poor might be some form of non-lawful good. While I could RP that, game mechanics do not know one's intent for doing non-lawful behavior. Thoughts?

As for racing, my personal experience is that 50m to 200m races are often the forte of very strong runners and that 400m and longer are often the won by leaner runners with exceptional endurance (constitution?). Reaction (dexterity) plays some role in a short race, but I would rate it secondary to STR. YMMV. :-) I don't see the point in getting get too wrapped up in it the details. Just enough differences to make it fun and interesting ...
