Elven Swashbuckler/Mage No-Reload SCS playthrough

edited December 2014 in Challenges and Playthroughs
Yesterday I decided to recreate a character I've been relatively succesful with once in the past, an elven Thief/Mage kitted as a Swashbuckler. I did this because my no-reload performances with my last five characters have been less than stellar to say the least:
- Bounty Hunter (killed by Jenkal in Gullykin)
- Cleric/Thief 1 (charmed in Cloakwood Mines)
- Wizard Slayer (killed by "pnp Battle Horrors" in Davaeorn fight)
- Cleric/Thief 2 (stunned and killed by Rayic Gethras in Athkatla)
- Transmuter who could only cast Alteration spells (kissed to death by Shoal on the Sword Coast - she was a female charname and I thought that Shoal only kissed males; I might continue her run if I learn to bear with minimal-reload).

In other words, only one out of five made it into BG2, and even that one didn't last very long there. I still have a run with Aya the Avenger, which has evolved into a roleplay adventure. I shall continue posting about her progress here.

The purpose of the present run with the Swashmage is to get her into Amn as fast as possible, because it's been a while since I last played SoA & ToB (except for a few quests with the Cleric/Thief). So unlike previous runs I've journalled on the forums, this one will be a more technical run in which I'll be more generous in using my metaknowledge of BG1. I'll be solo'ing most if not all of BG1, for quick experience gain even though I shall adhere to the XP cap. I'm still debating whether or not to pick up Coran for romance purposes. If charname makes it into SoA, gameplay will likely change because my knowledge of SoA/ToB is (even) less comprehensive than that of BG1. I'll probbaly end up using various NPCs in SoA & ToB.

So here is Gylliane:

image

My mouth fell open after about about 20 minutes of rolling for good stats...
image
For pure powergaming purposes I should have invested more in WIS, for Wish and lore, but I always want my Swashies to be highly charismatic and I wasn't willing to compromise on physical stats or INT, so this is how I redistributed her rolls:
image

She starts out with two pips in Scimitars. At levels 4 and 8 she'll invest proficiency points in Two Weapon Fighting so that dualwielding becomes viable by mid/late game. In the beginning she will be using her shortbow quite a lot, despite her Thac0 penalty for non-proficiency (which is partly offset by high DEX). The thing is that the Swashbuckler doesn't get many proficiency points to spend, compared to other 'fighter' types. And for a multiclass Swashmage, progression is even slower in this respect.

Backstory/Personality:

She trained for years with the Candlekeep guards but rather than copying her instructors she developed a fighting style of her own, relying on her agility and preferring light or no armor over the movement restricting heavier armors the guards would use, and slender curved blades rather than the more common but weightier longswords and bastard swords. Her fighting style makes her a fairly good dualist for a beginning adventurer but it also makes her vulnerable against groups and archers. Fortunately Gylliane has an attunement for the arcane arts and she has learned to use some basic arcane spells, thanks to Gorion's teachings, that enhance her fighting prowess. But as many inexperienced adventurers, she'd benefit greatly from more advanced magical training. Spells that buff her as a fighter and spells that strip her foes' protections interest her more than damaging spells or crowd control spells, though she will soon learn that especially the latter may well be indispensable for her to survive as an adventurer. With Imoen she practised certain thieving skills, especially sneaking and picking locks, but in a context of play and even mischief rather than one of formal training.

[I gave her the True Neutral alignment so that she wouldn't be affected by Unholy Blights that some priests cast in SCS (nor by Holy Smites that future party members may cast), but I I'll try to roleplay her true to her alignment. The fact that I'll be metagaming more than I usually do, does not detract from that. The metagaming will manifest itself more in quest order, rather than in behaviour toward NPCs.]
Unlike seekers of balance between good and evil such as Jaheira or unbiased mercenaries such as Greywolf, Gylliane isn't committed to neutrality as such. She's simply a flawed person, too flawed to be good-aligned. For example she adores elegant blades, especially the cutlass and the scimitar (along with the wakizashi and the ninja-to the only blades she's developed an affinity with so far), and she wouldn't hesitate to resort to theft to acquire an enchanted blade for herself. Other flaws include her somewhat quick temper and her resentfulness, both consequences of a sensitive and passionate nature when it comes to her interaction with others. In contrast, she'll often be indifferent about social issues that other people would have strong feelings about. This is due to a distinctly libertarian outlook on life. In her liberal worldview people ought to leave each other alone and at peace as much as possible. However she's highly deferential of life and liberty and disapproves not only of the lowlife murderer but also of the presumptuous paladin who kills a stranger to "enact justice". She loves a good duel, one of her favourite activities, but she's unlikely to pick fights and would resort to bloodshed only in self-defense. She's unlikely to display outright evil behaviour and she may even combat evil, though not retro-actively (to punish or enact justice when the damage has already been done, like the aformentioned paladin might do). Note that indifference may as well cause her to refrain from taking action in a given situation.

I'll post a first installment tomorrow.

Looks great. I think you will have no problems in BG1 being a mage. You might get bored, though, without the challenge of not having arcane magic :-D

My word! A 97 roll! Good job my man! That's positively brilliant! As for the character, she seems interesting. I'll be looking forward to reading her adventures. I must admit I've been toying with the idea of a solo swashbuckler recently. No mage, just pure backstabless thieving awesome.

Ah the Mage/Thief, a good candidate for this playthrough. I hope you will at least reach Irenicus in hell, where your previous Swashmage got stuck IIRC and complete the saga !

    Best of luck

Good progress so far! Those combined items sound awesome, especially that robe. Shouldn't be too hard to find the Traveller's Robe, unless your mods have made it more scarce.

As for my swashbuckler, I was originally thinking of going with an elf, which seems the most accurate race for it, but now I am tempted to take the h-orc.

Yes I really dig the robe, but I'm afraid I won't get the traveller's robe before Cloakwood Mines (Drasus & Co).

I agree that Elves are a great race for swashies, but a half-orc could make for a interesting character concept, and 20 STR (and even 20 CON for regeneration) would make him/her a beast in combat :)

Could you not find one on the four red mages in the spider wood, east of Larswood? I understand not going there yet, but it is an available option.

I think the main mage has a special mod added robe (which gives AC8 and a few low level bonus spells), and the three lackeys have robes of elemental resistance, unless this is randomized.

Either way, Cloakwood Mines won't be too long. I intend to go to the Nashkel Mines and Bandit Camp soon. After that I could rush through the Cloakwood areas (and save their quests for later) to get to Drasus & Co.

Looks like GG has good prospects for making it to ToB. What mods are you using other than SCS?

@Twani No problem, I'm happy to share :)
This is the link to the mod you're asking for. I'm not sure whether it's compatible with BG1:EE though. (I'm playing with a BGT install.)
And thanks for wishing me luck!

Sorry, this is offtopic (though I wish you luck!)... but where can I find Thalantyr, Item Upgrade? Looks like my kind of thing.
  • CrevsDaakCrevsDaak Member Posts: 7,155
@Twani I've found it here over SHS, I don't think that it has been remade for the EE.
  • BlackravenBlackraven Member Posts: 3,486

@Twani No problem, I'm happy to share :)
This is the link to the mod you're asking for. I'm not sure whether it's compatible with BG1:EE though. (I'm playing with a BGT install.)
And thanks for wishing me luck!

I'm quoting myself, because my reply to you question @Twani, is posted before your actual question (see 5 posts above... )

Eh, I'll strangle it and beat it till it cooperates with me. I make mods BGEE compatible with many shakes of my fist. Thanks, @CrevsDaak and @Blackraven!

Kind of scary that you could respond before I asked my question. Spooky... very spooky.

@Twani, it would be cool if I could teach you my unintentional spooky clairvoyance and you could show me how to mould mods :) Anyway, hope it'll work for you.

Oh god, kits. I look at them and cross my eyes and drool, basically. Basic mods I can get working, but kits? They're beyond me.

I'll stick to forcing mods to behave. I have a margarita, and I've discovered mods will do anything for alcoholic beverages. It's a mystery, but one I can't complain about.

@Twani: CamDawg has a kit-modding tutorial in the G3 forums (probably you already heard about this) that covers all what you need to make a BG2 kit, to make it a EE compatible kit you'll need some other stuff. First, the latest WeiDU as well as a .tpa by Wisp that edits the 2DAs to add the information of your kit, so including it and setting up some information on it will make it work for the EEs. Here I can give you an example of how to make a kit for the EE.

Oh geez, @CamDawg, I'm actually in the process of trying to make a Cleric kit! Thanks for the code; I'll definitely look it over as I start trying to put things in place. I really appreciate it!

That was a lot of action for one night Raven. My bard just died to an incredible run of bad luck, so I may follow your lead and run a magic-user thief to get someone else to ToB. Good luck with Gylliane and keep us posted.
  • BlackravenBlackraven Member Posts: 3,486
@Aurorus, thanks yes, I'm really trying to take her at a good pace through BG1. What happened to your Blade?

Caster/Thief multi is great in my experience. Cleric/Thieves receive little love, but they're a very flexible class and the cleric spells can turn your character into a highly effective backstabbing thief.
The way a Mage/Thief is played depends a bit on whether and how she's kitted. My Swashmage is more or less similar to a Fighter/Mage with a few pros and cons, a Mage/Assassin won't be a great fighter or thief initially but poison weapon is a marvelous ability. Of course if you dual you'll become a great mage with a number of thief skills.

My bard died thanks to about 6 consecutive 20s rolled against various people. He, Viconia, and Imoen were carrying stuff back to town and all encumbered when they got attacked to 2 worgs.. yes worgs at level 5.. both scored critical hits for max damage on him and killed him... absurd run of bad luck against me.

I played my mage-thief all night last night; well he´s just a bounty hunter atm. He may stay just a bounty hunter, but he will probably dual class to mage at lvl 11. He is running nicely at level 5 with Vicky, Imoen, Kagan, Edwin, and Dorn (BGEE blackguard). I was using Shar Teel and dualed her to thief, but she got hit 4 times in row crit for max damage and died 4 times in a row (shades of my bard)- 4 attacks against her- 4 deaths... so I left her body in the Revenant´s tomb and picked up Dorn.

@Aurorus Ah yes, unlucky rolls, very frustrating. It's similiar to what happened to me yesterday against Tranzig: he saves three times against spell, and I failed to save against his first spell he cast. Fortunately Tranzig is quite harmless. On SCS it's recommendable to travel invisible, also in the first portion of SoA, because some random encounters can be very inconvenient.
As to your Bounty Hunter, level 11 is a good moment to dual because of the special traps you get. In the original game I would have preferred the multiclass I think(thrown maze traps are great), but I think in EE the traps cannot be thrown.
