In honor of the World Cup: Who would be your Baldur's Gate NPC Starting XI?

So, World Cup is on my mind these days, as I'm sure it is on a lot of others.

So lets make a Baldur's Gate NPC starting XI!

We can do lots of things.
-One team with all joinable NPCs, one with all non-joinable.
-Good NPCs vs Bad NPCs
-BG1 NPCs vs BG2 NPCs
-All Elf XI vs All Dwarf XI?
-An all-shorty team?

Lets do this!

I'd like to humbly invite my dear friends and fellow enthusiasts @bengoshi‌ @Dungeonnoob‌ @Montresor_SP‌ @Anduin‌ @Blackraven‌ @Qbert‌ @element‌ @Pibaro‌ @Belteshazzar89‌ @TheElf‌ to join in

I'd also like to troll two non-football fans for absolutely no reason @Metalloman‌ and @meagloth‌ . Let's also get @CrevsDaak‌ in here because he's Crevs.

Minsc in goal... He's big and barmy... Which describes every keeper I ever met.

Haer'Dalis on the wing... Flashy in attack, useless in defence.

Edwin as sweeper, lying deep and pulling the strings.

Korgan & Kagain as midfield engine-room... Big tackles and lots of energy (high Con).

Keldorn & Valygar up front? Big-K as the target man, with Valygar nipping in behind (backstabbing)?

Xan would actually make a good deep-lying playmaker.
He even kind of looks like Pirlo...
Not the best motivational speaker however

He will start for my good-aligned team
He shall strike a ball deep into evil's net... there is no more worthy a cause.

Not even the sport of football would come out a winner with these guys involved...

Xan is totally the manager or coach or whatever footballers call it. And the publicity man. "We're all doomed".

I would put Firkraag in goal... in his true form, of course, he'd be very hard to get round.

    - Montaron is definitely a striker, invisible at times but deadly in the box.
    - Vicky and Yeslick as centre backs perhaps, definitely somewhere in defense.
    - Kivan as a free kick and corner kick specialist.

Cespenar shall be the keeper of the tea cup! Montaron is likely more of a coffee cup person, while Mazzy would perhaps tend more towards espresso cups. Not sure about Jan though... perhaps turnip parfaits?

Obviously my first thought was that you surely want all the physical characters, fighters and paladins and possibly some clerics (although Viconia may be quick, but with her constitution I'm sure she'd last a whole ninety minutes). But then I thought mages and healers could definitely be useful in some way... although I'd have to check the rulebook. Are you allowed to pertrify your opponents or turn them into chickens, or are those sending off offences?

A pack of kobolds would represent a team of Honduras.

@booinyoureyes‌ You already know my idea of BG NPCs as footballers (from the Meme thread):

I think that a great magician like Edwin would be a perfect goalie - to me, in the BG world, the magic would prevent goals just like Stoneskin prevents getting hit and Edwin can have the biggest number of Stoneskins in the game.

I also think that a strong fighters like Minsk, Shar-Teel and Sarevok would be wonderful forwards - personally, I wouldn't like the thought of opposing such tough warriors with extra STR in an open field.

Kivan and Coran, to me, are ideal wingers: quick, accurate in passes and stealthy.

Ajantis and Dynaheir form a strong alliance in the center of the field: Paladin's Protection from Evil and Magic buffs/debuffs would cement this area.

Safana and Monty would be left- and rightbacks - stealthy and yet solid. And Safana would definitely play next to both Coran and Eldoth. This trio would certainly raise a few eyebrows.

As the last defender and a captain I would choose Branwen - the power of her will is immense. Her clerical abilities are what you need next to your goalie.

OK, I'll bite and start in a 3-5-2 combination consisting of joinable NPCs.

Goalkeeper: Shar-Teel. She has great Strength and Dexterity and is intimidating when she goes out to catch or fist away the ball, all of which is important for a goalie. She could also play defense but I'm a bit worried about her low Constitution. Sarevok would be a good alternative in this position.

Libero/Sweeper: Yoshimo. His high stats are suitable for a player who must be able to evaluate when he can advance with the ball, when he needs to stay back, and where he needs to position himself when under attack.

Central Defense: Korgan and Minsc. Two intimidating guys who will scare the hell out of the opposition's forwards and aren't afraid to go all-in to stop an advancing opponent. (Though I'm worried that Korgan may get too many yellow and red cards.)

Defensive Midfield: Sarevok. Another position where we need a huge, intimidating figure who can act in both defensive and offensive roles.

Wings: Montaron and Xzar. Not only are they both dextrous and reasonably strong, keeping them on either side of the field will also stop them from tearing each others' throats out. ;-)

Central and Front Midfield: Dynaheir and Imoen. Two positions where we need brains, not brawn. These two ladies will be good at finding weaknesses in the opposition's defenses and either passing the ball to a wing or forward or advance themselves as "hanging forwards". I imagine Dynaheir as the playmaker and Imoen as the hanging forward but they can swap roles when appropriate.

Forwards: Alora and Coran. I like the idea of a small and a big forward and both of them are highly dextrous players who can hide in shadows, get around the opposition's defense before either passing the ball to another player or taking a shot at goal. Alora also has the impish humor which can help the team's morale if things are going south.

Coach: Viconia. The coach should be able to plan a strategy and change it as the game progresses. Other choices are Edwin (better Intelligence) and Aerie (high Intelligence and Wisdom) but I am not sure the players would respect them. Valygar would be a good assistant coach for her, if they can agree to not rip each other's eyes out... at least until after the match.

Another consideration. Minsc, Dynaheir, Aerie, Imoen... most good characters get along and will work together as team (well, Minsc might have a berserk rage which could be problematic). I'm worried that characters like Edwin and Korgan won't really cooperate with the others, or even with each other, and may just try to hog all the glory for themselves. They would need a very strong and charismatic team captain. Someone like Sarevok.

Can the opponent team be the Maiden Team? ;D
  • Montresor_SPMontresor_SP Member Posts: 2,208
@Coutelier Good point, and I'm also worried that a "mixed" team such as mine will have problems with reputation. If we commit too many fouls, the good characters will be unhappy; if we get a reputation for good sportsmanship we risk having half the team walking out in disgust. :-)

@booinyoureyes‌, thanks for the invitation to ruin this starting XI...

First, make sure that the captain has lots of charm to deal with the referee. Given some of the officiating I've seen so far, I'd suggest that the captain have at least one Charm Animal Spell in his repertoire.

Second, make sure to load up on long-range skills in the midfield. Given the number of goalkeeper flubs and mistakes on long, slow shots, we could lucky.

Third, and most importantly, have a lot of resurrect spells at the ready, because our forwards need to have extra low HP in order to constantly go down in the penalty area.

Noober as the annoying pitchside guy who shoves a microphone in someone's face and asks "How do you feel?"

Or Noober and Neeber as linesmen. Can't think of a suitable referee to go with them, though. ;-)
