Multiplayer across standalone and Steam

Hi there, fellas. Sorry if there's another thread on the subject but I couldn't seem to find any. Blame it on the vodka.

I've purchased IWD:EE through Beamdog and play using the standalone launcher. I'm also planning a multiplayer run with a few friends of mine who are about to purchase the game via Steam.

Now, I've noticed that the Steam version has the Steamplay feature, which should make things a bit easier, but I wanted to know if any of you have any experience trying multiplayer between players who are and aren't using the Steam version. Does it work?

I'll purchase the Steam version if necessary, but only if it's *really* necessary.

Any info on that would be very much appreciated.

    cross platform multiplayer should be possible, unfortunately i've only tried all steam copies :(
